TRAINING & EVENTS CHAMBER BUSINESS TRAINING

The Chamber offers a wide and diverse range of training support for members and non-members alike, all with the aim of enhancing skills, developing knowledge and driving the growth of your business

Refocusing the mind on upskilling

By Vicki Thompson (pictured), the Chamber’s Business Training Manager

As this month’s magazine focuses on the United Kingdom’s impending departure from the European Union, it got me thinking about employability and the access to a skilled workforce. Whatever the pros and cons of

Brexit, what the ongoing process has done is refocus the mind on the need for businesses of all shapes and sizes to have – and have access to – good quality, skilled employees. Hiring staff externally is a

process that the vast majority of organisations have to do from time to time in order to fill a particular role. However, one of the best ways an organisation can ensure their workforce is fully synergised with the needs of the business is to upskill and provide a clear career progression path from within. Not only does this mean you’re

training your staff to develop the specific, bespoke skillsets you need

at any given time, you’re demonstrating to your staff that you’re committed and invested in their development. Not only can this increase output – a happy employee is a productive employee – it also increases loyalty, meaning an external recruitment process can become less important. The other great thing about

investing in your workforce is that it can be applicable to all your staff, whatever their levels of experience – from apprentices up to senior leadership team. These days, respected and high

quality training providers can provide a wide variety of training options for organisations of all sizes that are looking to upskill and progress their staff. If you’re requirements are particularly niche – or you’re looking for flexibility in the courses tailored to you – these options are also available and are not limited to
