CHAMBER NEWS

Major milestone for D2 programme

The D2 Business Starter Programme, a Derbyshire County Council and Derby City Council-funded project which helps people to start businesses throughout Derby and Derbyshire with a programme of themed workshops and one-to-one support, has hit the milestone of 100 starts. The latest batch of

businesses to launch with the help of the programme, which is delivered by the Chamber, includes sectors such as natural hand-dyed fabrics and ribbons, photography, custom clothing prints, dog walking, chimney sweeping, mindfulness and even VW campervan hire – a real mix from a diverse collection of individuals. Importantly, in respect of

the contract, the programme was due to have reached 100 starts by the end of September, so the project is ahead of profile at this stage, just over a year before it is due to end.

‘It’s given me the knowledge, contacts and confidence to forge ahead’

One of the programme’s beneficiaries, Marsha Ramroop, founder of flourishing Unheard Voice Consultancy, said: “Deciding to start a business on my own was a really scary prospect. Discovering the D2 Business Starter workshops, which were free, and getting the go ahead from my day job to work flexibly so I could attend them, was fantastic. “The trainer is a superb

facilitator with excellent skills, using inclusive learning approaches. I met a bunch of fantastic people and it’s given me the knowledge, contacts and confidence to forge ahead to succeed.”

For more information, or if anyone you know might be interested in the programme, either personally or professionally, please contact Rob.Bentley@emc-dnl.co.uk Spaces are still available on the Derby, Derbyshire Dales and Amber Valley workshops, being held over the coming months.

Get up to speed at Brexit event

With the date for the UK to leave the EU fast approaching – and with much progress still to be made – there has never been a more important time for East Midlands businesses to be up to speed with Brexit and trade developments. Taking place on Monday 22

October at Nottingham Forest FC’s City Ground, the Chamber’s free- to-attend Brexit and Trade Conference 2018 is a standalone event, supported by Enterprise Europe Network, which will provide businesses with the most up-to- date position on the negotiations on Brexit. The potential upcoming changes

to trade and skills are the focus of the conference, exploring key themes surrounding the topic. Crucially, guidance will also be given on how to begin to make contingency plans. Through presentations and expert panels, businesses will

Laura Howard

understand best practice that other key businesses will be adopting, and get their questions answered. Guest speakers include Simon Hart, Brexit Lead Partner and Head

of Knowledge Management at Chamber strategic partner RSM. A full list of speakers and

presenters - along with their bios - can be found on page 67. Laura Howard, the Chamber’s

Head of International Trade, said: “Brexit has been a huge part of business life for the past couple of years but, with the deadline for exiting the EU fast approaching, it really is now front-and-centre in the minds of business leaders. “This conference is a perfect opportunity for members to come together to talk, discuss and learn what they need to be doing to ensure their businesses are in the best possible position to tackle potential issues and, importantly, take advantages of opportunities.”
