Home And Dry- Midleton Men’s Shed Give Out First Set of Free Flood Gates
by SEAMUS WHELEHAN
A Midleton broth-
er and sister whose house was devastated by floodwaters, say they are thankful to the Mid- leton Men’s Shed for supplying them with a set of mobile flood bar- riers. Rosario and Tim- my White from Thomas Street, Midleton, are the first of ten households to receive the Dam Easy Gates from the group. The Whites, who live
on the banks of the Rox- boro River with their cat, Deise, had their ground floor devastat- ed by the historic flood of 2016. Almost 3 years on a Government pledge to spend €20mil-
lion on flood defences is failing to convince hard-hit householders, which has led to Midle- ton Men’s Shed taking matters into their own hands.
The group is
looking to help 10 el- derly and vulnerable low income families in the area fight back af- ter floodwater wrecked their homes in 2016. Rosario White
says
life on Thomas Street has been stressful for the past number of years following the
extreme
weather events of Jan- uary 2016, after raging waters submerged their ground floor in two feet of water. The wa- ter first filled the street, then rushed in the back door, up through the toilet and sinks. Due too
the low lying nature of Thomas Street and its proximity to the Rox- boro River, the lane way is prone to flooding, but the New Year flood was the worst in living mem- ory for the Whites. “It was coming up the front and at the same time it was coming in the back, it was coming in the toilet, it was coming up the sink. We basically had no chance to pre- pare.”
“When it rains
now we all feel it’s going to happen again, but we will be greatly reassured now that we have these [flood gates]. We are so grateful to get them.” The Office Of Public
Works say that there are 246 homes and busi- nesses at risk of flood, and continue to be at
risk, until the flood management system is put in place.
Construc-
tion of a Flood Relief Scheme for the market town is believed to be five years away, due to the complex nature of the project involving 4 different types of flood risk. The OPW say they should have a number of options available
to
consider next March, with a construction date anticipated for 2021, Once commenced, it’s believed the construc- tion phase will last up to 18 months.
To ap-
ply for the Dam Easy Flood Gate please con- tact Bill O’Leary, Mid- leton Men’s Shed c/o Edmund Rice Centre, Rosary Place Midleton.
Happy Birthday Dan O’Sullivan
Lots of Love, From Susan
