New battery technology could charge an electric car in seconds

A new type of ener-

gy storage system could revolutionise energy stor- age and drop the charg- ing time of electric cars from hours to seconds it has been claimed by a research team at the Uni- versity of Glasgow.

in the

In a study published journal Nature

Chemistry, chemists from the University show how they have developed

a

flow battery system using a nano-molecule that can store electric power or hy- drogen gas giving a new type

of hybrid energy

storage system. The ‘hybrid-elec-

tric-hydrogen’ flow bat- tery, based upon the design of a nanoscale bat- tery molecule can store energy, releasing the pow- er on demand as electric power or hydrogen gas that can be used as fuel. When a concentrated liquid containing the na- no-molecules is made, the amount of energy it can store increases by almost 10 times.

One potential benefit of this system is that elec-

tric cars could be charged in seconds, as the mate- rial is a pumpable liquid. This could mean that the battery of an electric car could be “recharged” in roughly the same length of time as petrol cars can be filled up. The old battery liquid would be removed at the same time and recharged ready to be used again.

Professor Leroy Cronin

from Glasgow University said, “For future renew- ables to be effective high capacity and flexible en- ergy storage systems are

needed to smooth out the peaks and troughs in supply. Our approach will provide a new route to do this electrochemically and could even have ap- plication in electric cars where batteries can still take hours to recharge and have limited capacity. Moreover, the very high energy density of our material

could increase

the range of electric cars, and also increase the re- silience of energy storage systems to keep the lights on at times of peak de- mand.”

Blue Print delivers Yaris MMT advice The Toyota Yaris has

been a common sight on Irish roads since its launch in 1999. It re- mains very popular to- day and because of the volume of Yaris vehicles in use it

mainstays of many in- dependent garage busi- nesses.

A common mainte- nance issue

with the

Yaris concerns the Mul- ti-Mode

Transmission,

an area where Asian parts specialist Blue Print can offer a very effective and economical solution.

The Multi-Mode

Transmission or MMT is a type of sequential manual gearbox offered by Toyota on pre-2017 models. Instead of a conventional automatic transmission which uses hydraulics and a torque convertor, the MMT has a conventional friction clutch and mechanical

gear selector mechanism which is controlled elec- tronically.

Blue Print is one of the says be-

fore removing an MMT gearbox for a clutch re- placement, it is impor- tant to first set the clutch actuator to the ‘clutch clamp’ position. Failure to carry out this oper- ation is likely to cause the clutch actuator to be in the incorrect po- sition on reassembly of the gearbox. This could result in a multitude of problems such as clutch slippage, harsh and de- layed engagement, or no clutch operation at all. A suitable

diagnostic tool this step,

although it is possible to complete the procedure manually without a diag- nostic tool by following Blue Print’s manual pro- cedure, found on Blue Print Live.
