The Daisychain Animal Foodbank Help Appeal
by CLAIRE O’DONOGHUE The Daisychain Animal
Foodbank, based in Clane, Kildare, is looking to set up another base in the East Cork area. The charity, founded in 2015 by hus- band and wife,
and their dog sitting
outside. The weather was terrible and people were walking past going about their business. We decided to go to the nearby Mac- Donalds to
get a meal Jennifer
and Stephen Kavanagh, is the only Animal Food bank in Ireland. It organis- es food drives for homeless animals and those aban- doned who are
living in
shelters. It is also a way to link with
various ani-
mal rescue centres and cat trap neuter release (TNR) schemes. Speaking
with The East Cork Journal,
Stephen Kavanagh said, “Around Christmas 2014 while shopping, my wife and I were sitting in a cafe drinking coffee and looking out the window. We saw a homeless person
for him. We were stunned when he thanked us and gave it straight to his dog. This companion was the only being that gave him some sense of normalcy, and its friendship the only source of self-worth. From that moment the concept of an Animal Food Bank began.” The couple did an enor-
mous amount of research (Stephen
even did his
college thesis on the sub- ject). Through Stephen’s background in distribution logistics and his contacts in the freight, haulage and distribution centres in his area he discovered there

RAFTERS AND STRAW STRINGS By Emma M. Clohessy
The raven rolls the barn around.
Face up and charmed the young girl flings arms out and twirls to new thrill found.
Against the rafters, feathers sound and some fall loose from flapping wings as raven rolls the barn around.
The raven’s in a flurry bound.
Yet, with mirthful song she sings arms out and twirls to new thrill found.
Tired, dizzy, she falls to the ground,
to clench feathers in bunched straw strings as raven rolls the barn around.
Birds ear takes heed of barking hound. Escape now culled - to hope it clings flies out and twirls to new thrill found.
Now raven is with freedom crowned. The girl’s heart ceases racing rings as raven rolls not barn around –
arms rest from twirls and thrill just found. @eastcorkjournal / #eastcorkjournal eastcorkjournal Tel: 021 463 8000 • Email:

were
waste – pallets of useable pet
huge amounts of food being dumped
due, for example, to minor packaging damage. They spoke to these business- es offering to redistribute their “waste” which, in re- turn, saved the companies the cost of disposing and, at the same time, promote
their reputation as socially responsible. A win / win situation. As with all great ideas,
it started small and quick- ly grew to a charity with a 250 rescue centre data- base, delivering
free pet
food to needy rescue cen- tres. A truly altruistic idea with
enormous potential
for further good. However, Jennifer and Stephen have been covering the costs of delivery themselves. “One, two or more secure bases in the Cork area would cut our transport costs dra- matically” said Stephen, “As a charity we don’t ac- cept any monetary dona- tions, just pet food. So no
money exchanges hands for the food we distribute. There is complete trans- parency in all our trans- actions. We desperately need interested people to get involved. If you have a secure shed or facility that would take delivery of the food and keep accurate re- cords of what is taken in
and distributed, we could really use your help.” If you feel you could help this amazing charity please
contact them on
Facebook or through their website www.daisychain-

(Please note this charity
is NOT an Animal Rescue Centre.)
