ANOTHER BUSY WEEK! We’re in the thick of
‘championship season’ now, with teams beginning, continuing or ending their championship campaigns, with the usual ‘mixed bag’ of results reflecting the va- garies of any sports club’s results. Our golfers had a good day out on Thursday while our walkers crossed the county bounds to Lis- more on Sunday.
RED FM SENIOR HURLING LEAGUE Bandon 2-18, Killeagh 3-19 Following the
ever, admirably, all play- ers who were available to play travelled, and played with commendable
spirit
to deliver an important win. For both sides, a win was required to clear the threat of relegation from the RedFM Senior Hurl- ing League. For both sides, two contrasting halves saw a turbulent game but an exciting one for specta- tors. For Killeagh, a good start in the opening seven minutes with points from Matthew Murphy (free) and Gary Leahy saw us lead by two points to one but for the remainder of the
half things gradual- disap-
pointment of their cham- pionship exit at the hands of St. Finbarr’s just five days earlier, it would have been understandable had our senior team shown lit- tle appetite to travel to Ban- don for a league game on Friday evening last. How-
ly went downhill. Slop- py play against a strong breeze and up against the Charlie Hurley Park hill, we lost our shape and this, including the concession of an easy goal, the score line at the half-time whistle from Michael O’Mahony (Kilbrittain) was: Bandon 1-14 Killeagh 0-5.
Thankfully, in the sec- ond half, the tide turned immediately. Within 20 seconds of the
Andy Walsh slotted the
opening point and with help from his brother Dan- iel and from Kieran Lane the margin was reduced to nine points after two minutes. Both shared some fantastic scores from long ranges. The score was 1-17 to 0-13 after 43 minutes on the stopwatch before a free from Philip O’Neill landed in the square and first to pounce was Daniel Walsh to net the first green flag for Killeagh! Game on! Within five minutes, another
free from Mat-
thew Murphy led to a sec- ond crucial goal, this time buried by the elder Walsh brother, Andy,
and this
saw Killeagh hit the lead for the first time since the 8th
minute! Daniel added a
third goal which was well worked from midfield be- fore late points from Kil- lian Treacy (2) and Daniel Walsh (Bandon scored a late goal from a penal- ty) saw our senior hurlers claim a vital victory in our final game of the league season. Final score
at restart,
Charlie Hurley Park, Ban- don 2-18 Killeagh 3-19.
Team: C Walsh; M Fitzger-
ald, C Coughlan, S Long; K Murphy, B Collins, A Keniry; P O’Neill, K Lane; M Murphy, D Walsh, A Walsh; G Leahy, P O’Brien, K Treacy.
Subs; C
Fogarty, S Walsh, S Kearney, F McDonnell.
This was a great result
for the lads who deserve a lot more out of the season for the work they have put in. We will finish md-table in the league table which does not rqualify us for the knockout phase. Going forward the focus of atten- tion switches towards the Relegation Games for the retention of senior status. Games are pencilled in for September 8th
but watch
this space for full confir- mation. Players, manage- ment and backroom staff appreciate
the support
they have received since last February but they will need you one more time this season.
EAST CORK OIL JUNIOR A HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP Lisgoold 1-20, Killeagh 0-15 After
the
Round 2, hopes were high for our Junior A hurlers who faced Lisgoold in the East Cork quarter final in Castlelyons on Sun- day evening. On a warm evening, the large post- All-Ireland crowd saw a good game where Lisgoold gradullay took control after a good start by Kil- leagh. Dan Landers was the stand-out player early on, with three points from play in the first five min- utes, while Kevin Fennelly also continued his good form with two first-half points. On the quarter hour Lisgoold had taken the lead – 0-6 to 0-5 – and they retained this for the remainder of the game. A great save by Shane Scully on 17 minutes kept the game goalless, and at half-time
it was 0-11 to
0-8 in favour of Lisgoold, for whom John Cronin, Kieran
Cashman and excellent win over Bride Rovers in
John Cashman impressed throughout. The score- board dried up a little in the second half for Kil- leagh, with Aaron Walsh’s injury and Jerry Dullea’s dismissal both disrupting our catch-up efforts. A goal for Lisgoold on 55 minutes put the game to bed, with our team exiting
after three John Fionn McDonnell.
REBEL ÓG PREMIER 2A FÉ 14 HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP Lisgoold 3-10, Killeagh-Ita’s 8-11 Our under 14 hurlers
gave an impressive perfor- mance in comprehensively defeating Lisgoold in the Premier 2A hurling cham- pionship last Wednesday evening. Our opponents (and hosts) were deplet- ed and this undoubtedly helped our team, but their performance was nonethe- less excellent, with brilliant team work and perfor- mances all over the pitch. Daniel Walsh (excellent throughout), Colm Leahy, Callum Martin White and

Lisgoold progress to the semi-final, where they will have strong claims for this championship.

used: Crotty, Sean Walsh,
Conor Meade did the bulk of
the scoring, but there
were great examples of de- fending from Ben Budds, Ben Fogarty and Tommy Morrison, among others. By half time, we had a 4-6 to 0-6 lead, but Lisgoold never gave up and pushed us all the way and were rewarded with three goals of their own. David Buck- ley and Dylan McCarthy were very busy in midfield, while Pierse Geary contin- ued to show his prowess in goals with critical saves in the first half when this game was very much in the melting pot. Well done to the full panel and bainiste- oiri Martin Fitzgerald and Eoin Fitzgibbon. Team: Pierse Geary, Tommy
Morrison, Ben Budds, Ciaran Brennan, Jake Mulcahy, Ben Fogarty, Rory Motherway, Dy- lan McCarthy, David Buckley, Daniel Walsh,
