August 2018 Limerick End 45 Year Wait For “Liam McCarthy Cup”
Limerick 3-16 Galway 2-18
A truly remarkable hurl-
ing championship came to a dramatic conclusion in Croke Park on Sunday afternoon, when Limer- ick brought their 45 year drought to a close, when they just held out against the holders Galway in a tense and exciting finish to what overall was not a bril-
liant game. That will not matter to
Limerick who were deserv- ing winners despite hitting 20 wides over the 80 min- utes. Galway were certainly made to look below par as Limerick bossed the open- ing half and led by four points at half
time with a goal from Graham Mulcahy
the decisive first half score. In the second half Limer-
ick pushed on and a second goal from Tom Morrissey seemed to have the game wrapped up. Instead that score seemed to spur Gal- way into action and the Tribesmen came with a late burst that had Limerick on the ropes as Conor Whelan found the net. A third Lim- erick goal from sub Shane Dowling steadied the Lim- erick ship although Joe Canning again brought

All-Ireland Camogie Final Cork 0-21
Tipperary 0-9 A fine second half dis-
play by the reigning cham- pions Cork saw the rebel girls reach the “Liberty In- surance” All-Ireland Senior Camogie Final, when they got the better of Tipperary in Thurles last Saturday evening. Cork with Chloe Siger- son outstanding at
wing
back had to work hard in the opening half as Tipper- ary stuck with them. Full forward Cait Devanne was always a handful but with the returning Orla Cotter in superb form from free’s, Cork led by 0-9 to 0-6 at the interval with Sigerson land- ing two massive points while Cotter hit five from free’s. In the second half the
stronger Cork side began to assert
themselves and
with Aishling Thompson, Gemma O’Connor, Amy O’Connor and Libby Cop- pinger all involved the Cork scores began to pile up with
Katrina Mackey, Linda Collins , Patricia Mackey, Orla Cronin and Liz Ho- man all finding the range. Tipperary were unable to
match their first half display, although Orla O’ Dwyer was outstanding and along with Mary Ryan, Grace O’Brien and Cait Devanne offered most resistance, but in the finish Cork qualified for the final where Kilkenny will provide the opposition. The final few minutes saw the introduction of Bridge Corkery and she could well push for a starting place in the final. Cork: O Cotter 0-9, K
Mackey 0-3, C Sigerson 0-3, L Collins 0-2, A O’Connor, O Cronin, L Homan and P Mackey 0-1 each. Tipperary: C Devanne
0-5, C Maher, O’ Dwyer, G O’Brien and S Fryday 0-1 each. Cork: A Murray, N O’Callaghan, L Treacy, P
Mackey, L Coppinger, G O’Connor, C Sigerson,
J
White, a Thompson, an O’Connor, O Cronin, O Cotter, K Mackey, N Mc- Carthy and H Looney. Subs used L Collins for N McCarthy, L Homan for A O’Connor, A Sheehan for J White, L O’Sullivan for N O’Callaghan and B Cork- ery for L Coppinger. Tipperary: C Bourke, J A
Bourke, G Grace, C Quirke, C Mullanney, K Kenne- dy, M Ryan, L Loughnane E Fryday, Ciarda Maher, Caoimhe Maher, O’ Dw- yer, G O’Brien, C Devanne and S Fryday. Subs used M Ryan for Caoimhe Maher, R Cahill for L Loughnane, E Loughman for C Mullan- ney, C Hennessy for Ciardra Maher and M Campion for S Fryday. Referee: E Cassidy
(Down) The Cork Intermediate
team will also be in action on All Ireland Final day as they got the better of Down on Saturday afternoon to make it a double delight for the Cork girls.
Galway to within a score af- ter he slammed in a second goal.
Galway would have
gladly settled for a draw but a precious point from Graham Mulcahy gave the Shannon-siders a little breathing space with Joe Canning making it a one point game
once more.
Canning had one final chance to level but his 100 yard drive just fell short as Limerick survived to being their 45 year wait to an end.
A superb hurling sea-
son that had its fair share of controversy is now over and with the dust settled, Galway are Leinster Cham- pions, Cork are Munster Champions but
Limerick
are the All-Ireland champi- ons after a season of hurl- ing that will live long in the memory as John Kiely’s side ended the season on a high with Kyle Hayes named man of the match.. Galway 0-21 Kilkenny

East Cork clash in
Round 2 of the Cork Pre- mier Intermediate hurling championship at Pairc Ui Chinnide in Killeagh on Friday night.
Youghal,
down from Senior ranks, will be hoping for an ex- tended championship run, but they will need to be at their very best to get the better
of champion-
ship. Ballincollig were the better
the drawn game and Mid- leton will need to show improvement to win. Mid- leton will have been disap- pointed with their display so I expect them to be much better on this occa- sion. Players such as Fin- barr O’ Mahony, Paudie O’Brien,
Jake Hegarty,
Ross O’ Regan and Gar- ran Manley will be to the fore and if they can curtail the influence of Ian Jen- nings, Peter O’Neill and Cian Dorgan, then Midle- ton can come out on top. PIHC: in Killeagh at

Cork Looking To end 20 Year Wait For All Ireland U21 Title no
CORK V TIPPER-
ARY IN THE GAELIC GROUNDS LIMERICK AT 5.30PM Cork will journey to the
Gaelic Grounds in Lim- erick this Sunday hoping to end a twenty year wait when they take on Tipper- ary in the All -Ireland Final . this will be a repeat of the Munster Final, where Cork ran out convincing winners on a night that
saw everything go right for Denis Ring’s side. This is a different, day,
different pitch and yes a big occasion for both sides as they try to claim the prize on offer. Cork will be odds on to claim the title but Tipperary will be itching for another shot at the re- bels, and this could make them a very different op- ponent. Since their defeat Tip-
perary have recovered and their defeat
the outcome of the changes of Galway
marks them down as a dan- gerous opponent no matter what
Munster Final. Cork will need to be at their best to come out on top and they will be hoping that Declan Dalton has recovered from the injury he picked up against Wexford in their semi-final win. Cork are likely to make
unless they
are forced to which means Ger Collins will be in goal, fronted by David Lowney, Eoghan Murphy and Ni- all O’Leary. Outside them John Cashman, Ger Mill- erick and Billy Hennessy are a strong half back line. Senior stars Mark Coleman and Daragh Fitzgibbon will be at midfield while in at- tack Robbie O’Flynn, De- clan Dalton and team cap-

that might not be as strong as they once were, but they are still a formidable opponent. Players such as Eoin, Paudie and Colm O’Sullivan are still to the fore, while Donal Og Cu- sack, Dylan Cahill, Ian Cahill and Keith Dennehy will certainly put it up to Youghal. The
sea-siders
will hope that Cork star Bill Cooper, James O’ Ma- hony, Nigel Roche, Richie Cunningham, Damien and Brendan Ring, John Grace, David ‘Mahony and Lee Desmond will perform well and if they do them Youghal could come out on top. Extra time will be played in the event of a draw and that
tain Shane Kingston make up a strong half forward line. Inside them Sarsfields due Liam Healy and Jack O’Connor will flank full forward Tim O’Mahony. If Dalton is ruled out then Michael Calahane would be
the ment.

Galway did have some
consolation as their Minor hurling side retained their title, giving the Tribesmen a third title in four years as Geoffrey Lynskey’s side put in a huge second half dis- play to blow Kilkenny away. After a good start Kilkenny were four points clear but six in a row brought Galway back into the game. Kilken- ny finished the half strongly and led by a point at half time. In the second half howev-
cannot be ruled out. Saturday August 25th JAHC:Q/F in Car-
rigtwohill at 3.00pm Erin’s Own v Russell Rovers The first of three quar-
ter finals in the East Cork Oil sponsored Junior “A” hurling championship will bring Erin’s Own and Russell Rovers into oppo- sition in Carrigtwohill on Saturday afternoon . This should be a good contest as last year’ defeated fi- nalist Russell Rovers, at- tempts to get back to the final. They are in with a great chance in my opin- ion and will look to the likes of Kevin Moynihan, Eoin and Jack McGrath, JP Ivers along with Brian Hartnett and Josh Beau- sang to get them through. Erin’s Own are always dif- ficult to beat in this grade and they will again be strong here with the likes of Kieran Murphy, Bar- ry Og Murphy and Cian O’Callaghan in their side. I think it will be close but with Frank Flannery guid- ing them this year, I think that Russell Rovers will come out on top. JAHC: Q/F in Midle-
ton at 4.45pm
Cobh v Sarsfields The opening match of
Morris and Daragh woods are all fine hurlers. On balance Cork are the bet- ter and while I expect the contest to be closer on this occasion, cork are taken to end their 20 year wait for this title last won in 1998 by a really good Cork side. This current one is also a really good one that should be capable of coming out on top. Probable Teams. CORK: Ger Collins; David Lowney,

Eoghan Murphy, Niall O’Leary; John Cashman, Ger Mellerick, Billy Hennessy; Mark Coleman, Darragh
Fitzgibbon; Robbie
O’Flynn, Declan Dalton, Shane Kingston; Liam Healy, Tim O’Mahony and Jack O’Connor. Tipperary: Ciaran Barrett, Podge Cam-
pion, Bill McGrath, Killian O’Dwyer, Paddy Flanagan, Paddy Cadell, Dillon Quirke , Ger Browne, Colin English, Jerome Cahill, Paudie Feehan, Mark Kehoe, David

er Galway really blossomed as they took the game to Kilkenny and by the finish they were seven points clear. This Electric Ireland mi- nor hurling championship produced some marvellous games throughout the sea- son, especially in Munster, but in the finish it is Galway that retain their title as they again are crowned All-Ire- land minor hurling cham- pions, so their production line is still very strong.
a double header in Clon- mult Memorial Park sees Cobh take on Sarsfields third side and this too could be a tight contest. One would feel that Cobh should be too strong with the likes of Darragh Kelle- her and Cian Spriggs to the fore, but Sarsfields last year’s Junior B champions could still prove too strong for them, depending on who they have available to them this time round. St Ita’s v Carrig Na bhFear at 6.15pm On paper this could be a good contest, but with Cork captain
Seamus
Harnedy a doubtful starter for St Ita’s along with Ed Coleman who was red carded it looks to be a tough task for the Pilmore outfit. Ciaran O’Brien, Eoin Loughlin, Cathal Deane and Pad- raig
O’Brien will give
their best shot but I expect Carrig Na bhFear to prove too strong. Players such as Timmy & Paul Geaney, Aidan Hegarty, Paul O’Keeffe, Paul Cashman, Shane Horgan, and John and James Forde look too strong in my opinion and Carrig are taken to come out on top.
