sport@eastcorkjournal.ie Winning Start For St Catherine’s
St Catherine’s 1-17 Grenagh 0-15
Last year’s county jun-
ior champions St Cath- erine’s made a winning start in the Intermediate grade when they got the
better of Grenagh at the Kilavullen venue. With Imokilly duo Brian Mulcahy and Dan Man- gan to the fore in attack
along with Shane O’Brien as St Catherine’s carried too much firepower for the mid-Cork outfit. St Catherine’s began
well as O’Brien, Mangan and Philip Keane helped them to a five point lead after the opening quarter, but Adrian O’Neill pulled one back for Grenagh but
Brian Mulcahy ensured that St Catherine’s led by 0-10 to 0-6 at the interval. On the
resumption
Grenagh with Tom Kenny and Gerry Russell doing well, as the gap closed to a point as Peter Sweeney, Seamus Cronin, Adrian O’Neill, and Sean Bourke all found the target.
St Catherine’s did not panic and a well taken goal from Dan Mangan had them back in control as they added a few late points to run out deserv- ing winners, after stepping up to the
Intermediate
grade. St
Catherine’s: S
O’Brien 0-7, D Mangan 1-3, B Mulcahy 0-2, P Keane 0-2, C Hegarty, B O’Brien and C Kearney
Douglas Gain Revenge On Killeagh
Douglas 3-19 Killeagh 1-9
Payback was certainly
on the minds of Douglas since the first-round draw was made, with Killeagh again providing the op- position in the opening round last Friday night in Pairc Uí Rinn. When the sides met last year Killeagh came out
on
top, but this time round Douglas made no mistake
and gained revenge with a strong performance that Killeagh could not match. With the sides sharing
the opening points with Gary Leahy and Kieran Lane for Killeagh being cancelled out by Mark O’Connor and Shane Kingston for Douglas, it looked as if we might have a game on our hands, es-
pecially as Brendan Del- aney put Killeagh in front with the opening goal of the game in the 7th
min-
ute. Killeagh flattered to deceive however and managed just two points for the remainder of the half with an Eoghan Keniry free and a Kevin Lane
side-line cut. In
contrast Douglas got their game going with points from Mark Collins, Luke McGrath and Donnacha Murphy, drawing them level while a Mark Dolan goal in the 13th
set them on the road to
victory. A second goal set up by Mark o’Connor for Shane Kingston to finish along with points from Luke McGrath, Cian Mc- Carthy and Shane Bourke helped Douglas to a 2-8 to 1-4 interval lead with both sides missing goal chances just before the interval. Had Killeagh taken their chance there would just have been a goal between the sides. The
second half re- minute
ally needed Killeagh to start well but instead it
was Douglas with Shane Bourke
pointing before
Shane Kingston rattled in his second goal and really it was game over. Killeagh managed just five second half points with Eoghan Keniry and Brian Collins hitting a brace either side of one from team cap- tain Daniel Walsh. It was never going to be enough to reel in a Douglas at- tack without injured duo Alan Cadogan and Brian Turnbull, but Douglas had plenty in reserve as Mark O’Connor, Shane
0-1 each. Grenagh: S Cronin 0-4,
S Bourke 0-3, an O’Neill 0-3, P Barry-Murphy, T Kenny, a Duggan, P McSweeney and K Cum- mins 0-1 each. St
Catherine’s: E
Ahern, E Wallace, S Mor- ris, K Neville, L O’Con- nor, C Hegarty, J Neville, S O’Brien, C Kearney, R Galvin, B Mulcahy, S Cot- ter, R Galvin, D Mangan
Kingston, Cian McCa- rthy and Shane Bourke sent over some terrific points as Douglas easily gained revenge for last year’s defeat. Douglas are safely through to round three while Killeagh will need to show a huge im- provement if they hope to join them. Douglas: S
Kingston
2-4, M Dolan 1-0, M O’Connor 0-4, S Bourke 0-4, C McCarthy 0-3, L McGrath 0-2, M Collins and D Murphy 0-1 each. Killeagh: E Keniry 0-3,
B Delaney 1-0, K Lane 0-2, B Collins 0-2 G Le- ahy and D Walsh 0-1 each.
