Litter Pickers Set To Converge On Popular East Cork Beach

by SEAMUS WHELEHAN

Sunny banter will rise

from the sands of Garryvoe this weekend when a force of litter pickers descend on the popular East Cork beach. The 1 hour clean-up is

being organised by Clean Coasts Ballynamona in an effort to tackle issues with rubbish in the area. A previous group effort

saw 22 bags of litter includ- ing fishing nets and gear removed from Ballycroneen last Saturday 28 April. The team of 145 have

been key in the removal of tonnes of marine litter in the East Cork area, particu- larly near Ballycotton where they have been dealing with the ongoing issue of fly tip- ping. This coming Sunday 6

10:00am and 11:00am to have the strand looking ship shape ahead of the annual tourist season. The group are encour-

aging the public to meet in the beach car park and get involved and help in the clean-up blitz. Volunteers will be provid-

ed with bin bags, gloves and pickers. Clean Coast organiser

Proinsias O’Tuama said “it’s great to see so many people willing to get involved and do their bit. People are more aware now of marine litter. While the beach cleans help the environment they also make our seashore more presentable and attractive to tourists, which in turn helps boost the local economy. “ Mr O’Tuama said “it’s

important to remember that everyone can get involved and do their bit, they don’t have to wait for a designated clean-up event.”
