East Cork Residents Gear Up to Fight Plans for New Quarry
by SEAMUS WHELEHAN
A number of East
Cork residents are ob- jecting to a possible grav- el operation in their area which will see up to 20 lorry movements every hour. The
possibility has
left residents horrified, fearing for their health and worried about noise, traffic and the affect on housing. People living close to
Leamlara and Lisgoold say the potential reopen- ing of the Lackenbehy quarry could also pose a risk to the drinking water for up to 20,000 living
in Midleton and Car- rigtwohill. Roadstone, who op-
erate7 Quarries in Cork County, have applied to the Local Authority to reopen the site. The company plans to dig 110 feet deep on a 66 acre site above the Leam- lara River which feeds into the Owennacurra. The
operation will
be carried out over a 20 year period, and will see the removal of 300,000 tonnes of sandstone. The proposal has al-
ready encountered re- sistance from community groups who say the road infrastructure is unable to sustain quarry traffic.
@eastcorkjournal / #eastcorkjournal Both Irish Water and
the HSE say they, too, have concerns, among which the most serious is the potential for water contamination. Irish Water say they have concerns that
the
proposed development and discharge, under the existing discharge licence WP(W)006/09), repre- sents a potential risk to the Owennacurra River, the source water to Mid- leton and Tibbotstown Water Treatment Plants. The Water Utility,
however, say that if the quarry operators put cer- tain measures in place it should not have an ad- verse impact on either

of the Treatment Plants. The Lackenbehy Ac-
tion Group fear constant blasting could cause damage to septic tanks in the area ultimately lead- ing to contamination of the water supply, while also creating dust clouds that will get worse
as
quarrying continues to blast through the rock. Group spokesperson,
Claire Carroll , says they also have concerns that Roadstone
intend to
quarry below the natural water table. “They are going under
the water table and into the unknown, so when they blast in one area they could dry out of wa-
ter in another area, caus- ing some wells to dry up but flood others.” Ms Carroll claimed Roadstone were
using
the site as an opportunity to clear it of poor grade stone in a backfilling op- eration at the Dunkettle interchange. Roadstone were asked
to put someone forward for comment but have failed to do so. The
cation has yet before
Cork County
Council for approval. However, planners have sought further informa- tion regarding the pro- posal.

by SEAMUS WHELEHAN
In a recent article re-
garding the establishment of Cork County’s first permanent air monitoring
station we inadvertently stated the monitor is to be located close to Aura lei- sure centre. We are happy to confirm
the site location is close to Coral leisure centre.
