Outside the Box for Farm Safety

Silawrap celebrated the A Chara, - The ref-

erendum campaign is well and truly under way. All of us who are involved in either side of this cam- paign have a responsi- bility to democracy. All views need to be heard and we need to respect each other no matter how much we might disagree. Closed minds on any side stifle progress. Already this looks a challenge. Those of us who are

parents face a particular- ly difficult time. The ar- guments around repeal- ing the 8th

are incredibly

complex. Many adults of voting age are struggling to come to a decision. Our children have

no vote. They will not have

to make this decision. And that’s as it should be. Exposing them to this de- bate is both unnecessary and cruel. Anti-Repeal speakers

addressing Holy Com- munion groups (7 and 8 year olds) is just so wrong. It’s hard to attribute any benign motivation to this. Many of the ‘NO’ posters are also creating difficulties for families. I know my children have noticed them and I am going to have to have an unnecessary and difficult conversation. Is there re- ally any need for graphic posters on a subject that is being or will be covered on every news stream? My impression of the

campaign thus far is that for the most part my La- bour Party colleagues and the wider Together for Yes group are ap- proaching this campaign from a perspective

of

compassion. I hope and expect that you will no- tice this should you meet them. Can the ‘NO’ side say the same? As I always advise on all topics, listen to every point of view. There is none of us so wise that we know it all. But when you meet a ‘NO’ campaigner listen to see if you can hear any compassion. I haven’t heard much so far. Eric Nolan, Labour Party Midle-

ton.

recent launch of its new Work Safe Silawrap box with Minister of State for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Mr Andrew Doyle TD at their plant in Gorey, Co Wexford. In an effort to raise awareness of the importance of farm safety Silawrap is utilising their Silawrap box to remind farmers of 4 important messages this season – to work safe, check all safety guards, slurry gas kills and beware of livestock. Since 2008, there have been 210 farming related

deaths

in Ireland, with 24 farm- ing-related deaths in 2017 alone.

Speaking at the launch, Minister of State Mr An- drew Doyle TD said “This is a very simple and clever initiative by Silawrap to use their box to promote farm safety. The message

is delivered to the silage field on the machinery” he continued, “We all know of farmers and their fam- ilies who have to live with the consequences of a farm accident. Hopefully farmers will think about their

safety as they go

about their work”. Pat O Brien, Area Man- ager commenting at

the

launch said “Farm safety is of the utmost impor- tance at Silawrap and we believe one farm fatality is too many. We manufac- ture 500,000 rolls of silage wrap annually and with the new messaging clearly displayed on the box, we hope to raise awareness and promote farm safety in every farmyard in the country.” Silawrap Work Safe
