63 Dungourney Get The Better Of Douglas

Ballinhassig 1-22 Watergrasshill 0-15

the

Dungourney saw off strong challenge

of

the Douglas second side at Ovens on Sunday after- noon in the opening round

of the Cork Intermedi- ate

hurling champion-

ship. Strong displays from Shane Hegarty, Ryan Den- ny and Bill Ahern helped

Dungourney to a 0-6 to 0-5 interval lead, while a Kevin Kelleher save from a Mark Harrington penal- ty also helped their cause. An injury to Shane He-

garty was a blow for Dung- ourney but they continued to battle hard with Ryan Denny continuing to fire over the points. With the

sides still level going into the closing minutes anoth- er Ryan Denny effort, this time for a goal was saved by Patrick Scannell in the Douglas goal, but an alert Darragh Ahern fired to the net to give Dungourney the victory and a place in the third round. Dungourney: R Denny

Carrig V Blackrock SHC

Blackrock 1-19 Carrigtwohill 1-12

The second game began

with the Rockies playing with the advantage of the breeze but it was Carrig who played better against it and took the game to their city rivals. Liam Gos- nell, who was as precise as ever with placed balls, opened the scoring with a great point from a free on two minutes. They should

have been a further three points to the good only for the brilliant save by David O’Shea in the Blackrock goal when Gosnell had only him to beat. Gosnell added a further two points to put them in a three point lead with ten min- utes on the clock. Kevin O’Keeffe got the show on the road for the Rockies

with his opening point a minute later and David Meaney’s brilliant

strike

on twelve minutes result- ed in the games opening goal for Blackrock.

A silly

foul on Gosnell resulted in the first penalty of the day and Shane Devlin duly buried the ball for an inspirational goal for the East Cork side. Howev- er Tadhg Deasy pulled a point back for the Rock- ies and Eoin Smith lev- elled the game n the 20th minute with a point after a Carrig puck out went

astray. Gosnell was a real thorn for Blackrock in the latter part of the opening half as he was ever present in play and was unerring with frees. Both sides trad- ed points and in fairness to Carrig anything the city side threw at

them they

responded and such was the intensity of the game that only a point separat- ed the sides at the break, 1-8 to Carrig and 1-7 to Blackrock. Carrig drove on in the

opening few minutes of the second half and were

0-8, D Ahern 1-0, S He- garty 0-3, B Aherne and E Aherne 0-1 each. Douglas: D O’ Ma-

hony 1-4, J Holland 0-2, M O’Callaghan 0-2, C Sheehan and J Moylan 0-1 each.

Dungourney: K Kelle-

her, K Aherne, L Leahy, K Rohan, B Aherne, J Grif-

a further two points up as Tomas Hogan and Gos- nell a point each. Black- rock shook themselves down and upped their game with John and Niall Cashman closing down the Carrig runners and Alan O’Callaghan and Kevin O’Keeffe growing into the game as the half wore on. The Rockies hit four unanswered points in a five minute period, Gosnell returned a free for Carrig, but it was the Rockies who again upped the ante and hit a further three

points to extend

their lead. Carrig began to tire as the games inten- sity increased with Black-

fin, M Hegarty, D Healy, S Hegarty, B Aherne, J McCarthy,
