62 East Cork

have been in deeper trou- ble. Thankfully, a high delivery from Gary Le- ahy was caught by Dan Landers on 58 minutes at the edge of the square and finally we had our winning goal. Team: Colin Walsh,

Dylan Hogan, Bobby Mc- Carthy, Jack O’Rourke, Kevin Murphy, Brendan Delaney, Darragh O’Brien (0-1), Cathal Deane, Kil- lian Treacy, Keane Kelly Budds, Eoghan Keniry (1-5, 0-3f), Shane Smiddy (0-2), Dan Landers (1-0), Gary Leahy (0-1), David Ógbebor (0-2). Subs used: Aaron Walsh and Sean Walsh.

U21 Premier Hurling

Championship Killeagh-Ita’s 4-11, Courcey Rovers 1-16 Sunday November 5th

saw our team in action again, this time in Ovens against Courcey Rovers. The standard of hurling was much higher than the previous round, al- though the

temperature

had dipped quite consid- erably in the six interven- ing days. Bobby McCar- thy’s withdrawal through illness necessitated a change in defence, with Eoin O’Connor coming

in at corner-back (playing very well) and Darragh O’Brien going to full- back. Luke Fogarty also came in to the team, and justified his selection with a very industrious display up front. Keane Budds got our first score after three minutes and assisted Eoghan Keniry in getting the second on six minutes. Our first goal arrived on 13 minutes when Gary Leahy reacted quickly to a high delivery from Dar- ragh O’Brien, whipping the sliotar first time into the net. On the quarter hour we led by 1-4 to 0-4, and were grateful shortly after for a fantastic save by Colin Walsh. Courceys were

hurling very well

throughout with Jerry O’Neill and John McCa- rthy very prominent up front. Their efforts were thwarted by a second goal from Gary Leahy on 21 minutes, this time pounc- ing after Shane Smiddy’s shot was saved. McCar- thy’s excellent goal within two minutes reduced the margin to one goal (2-4 to 1-4). The final high- light of this half was a beautiful

sideline point

from over 40 metres by Dan Landers, which gave us a 2-06 to 1-06 lead. Courceys got off to the better start after half time

with three quick points, but Eoghan Keniry’s first- time goal on 36 minutes cancelled these and Gary quickly added an excel- lent point from distance. A period of relative stale- mate ensued for a while before

Eoghan turned

provider and David Óg- bebor got our fourth and final goal, just rewards for his efforts. Gary’s second point on 51 minutes gave us a 4-10 to 1-12 lead, but Courceys refused to give up and scored four more points, three from play to reduce the margin to just one score as injury time beckoned. Eoghan’s final point on 62 minutes fi- nally sealed the deal, and brought us into a coun- ty semi-final. One, and hopefully, two, more hours of championship hurling to come! Team: Colin Walsh, Dy- lan Hogan, Eoin O’Con- nor, Jack O’Rourke, Kevin Murphy, Brendan Del- aney, Darragh O’Brien, Cathal Deane, Keane Kelly Budds (0-1), Da- vid Ógbebor (1-0), Eo- ghan Keniry (1-6, 0-2f), Shane Smiddy (0-1), Dan Landers (0-1s), Gary Le- ahy (2-2), Luke Fogarty. Subs used: Richie Long, Aaron Walsh, Killian Treacy.

PROJECT NATIONAL RECOGNITION Almost two years after

beginning our Healthy Clubs Project journey, the four clubs using Pairc Ui Chinnéide have been granted “Official GAA Healthy Club” status for the next three years, 2018- 2020. Killeagh GAA was one of four Cork clubs (along with St. Finbarr’s, Midleton and Castlehav- en) and 58 clubs nation- wide (with at least one from each county) granted this status at a Healthy Clubs Project Recognition Event held in Croke Park on Saturday November 4th

. Uachtarán Chumann

Luth Chleas Gael, Aogán Ó Fearghaíl, was present to congratulate each of the 58 clubs present and to re-inforce

the GAA’s

commitment to the pro- ject and to the concept of inclusion in all our com-

munities. David Harney, CEO, Irish Life, whose company have sponsored the Healthy Clubs Project since its inception, spoke about the importance of sport and all aspects of healthy living in our lives, while Minister of State for Health Promotion Cathe- rine Byrne, in congratulat- ing attendees, extolled the virtues of volunteerism in keeping communities vibrant and healthy. After presentations by Colin Regan and Aoife O’Brien of the GAA’s Community and Health team, and a quick (healthy) re-fuel, it was time for plaques to be presented to each of the 58 clubs, with recently-re- tired Tyrone

footballer

(footballer of the year in 2008), Sean Cavanagh the guest of honour.

Sean’s

inspiring speech touched on volunteerism and in- clusion also, making ref- erence to the efforts in his own club and county to include people of different nationalities, abilities and cultures in GAA activities. Finally, with presentations completed, it was time for a photo call in the Hogan Stand and lunch. Each of the 58 clubs who have completed their two-year Healthy Clubs Project set- up are now recognised as “Official Healthy Clubs”

until 2020, and over half of these clubs have also decided to go ‘smoke- free’. It’s good to be able to state that the Páirc Uí Chinnéide clubs feature on this roll of honour. NO RESTING ON

LAURELS – GET THE WALKING BOOTS ON! One of the best suc-

cesses in our Healthy Clubs Project has been our monthly walk, which saw us reach our highest point, literally, with the as- cent of Carrauntouhill in September. For the winter months we will stay a little closer to home and closer to sea-level, so our No- vember walk (No. 22), on Sunday next, November 12th

/ Mahon on the outskirts of Cork city. We will meet at

the car park adjacent to Blackrock Castle

at

10.00 a.m., with a range of options available

for

walkers along a flat route. New walkers are always welcome to join us. This walk is very suitable

for

all ages and abilities of walkers, including those with buggies, wheelchairs and bikes / trikes for the younger ones. We had a good turnout for our Bank Holiday walk last week, so hopefully we will contin- ue to grow our numbers month by month.
