Youghal Astronomy Club Host “SNAP-CHAT” in Youghal Library
by DENISE FITZGERALD
Leah Burgess joined a very interested
audience
in Youghal Library last week to talk about pho- tographing The Aurora
from County Waterford “which”, she assured everyone, “would be every bit as good if pho- tographed Cork!”
from County
In a quick interview with The East
Cork
Journal prior to starting, Leah said she would be talking about Solar Winds, understanding the Aurora and, of course, how to take photographs and when to take them. A video display of spec-
tacular pictures taken by Leah from the Vee entitled ‘Night Scape’ were superb, and she explained in detail how to successfully photo- graph at night and the par- ticipants, some of whom had brought along their
cameras, were delighted
with the advice and tips given by this very talented photographer. Well done, Youghal As-
tronomy Club, for your initiative in organising this event.

Cobh Councillors Say Slum Landlords Who Put People’s Lives at Risk
by SEAMUS WHELEHAN
Statutory business was
suspended for a time at the Cobh and Glanmire Municipal district on Monday 6 November to discuss the fallout from last week’s Prime Time Investigates programme on slum landlords. The programme fea-
tured Cobh man Leo Owens who is a tenant in the same rental accom- modation in the town for almost 20 years. The
accommodation
has no hot water, no cooking or washing facil- ities, is damp and toilets are blocked. Since the
property was taken over by a new
landlord last year it has fallen into further disre- pair.
Councillor Diarmuid O’Cadhla who request- ed the
suspension of
standing orders told the executive, tougher action needs to be taken. “Every resource must
be used to prosecute of- fending landlords and to enforce the law re- garding minimum stand- ards.” Earlier this year Cork
County Council report- ed that 97% of proper- ties inspected failed to meet ards.
inspected, 733 failed be- cause they lacked proper fire safety or ventilation.

regulatory stand- Of 756 rental units
In some cases, the ac- commodation had in- sufficient ventilation for open and solid fuel fires or lacked proper smoke alarms or fire blankets. Local authorities are
expected to review all its rental properties once every 4 years. Cork County Council
say they are only provid- ed with enough resourc- es from government, to carry out inspections on 5% of privately rented properties. Fine Gael Cllr An-
thony Barry said “en- forcement is one issue. Anyone who can house people in those condi- tions should be impris- oned.”
While Labour Cllr eastcorkjournal
Cathal Rasmussen said “the difficulty is there are rules and regulations, they are not being en- forced. The fire officer said it should be closed down but it’s the respon- sibility of the landlord to find alternate accommo- dation.” Junior Minister for Housing Damien Eng- lish says the Government are committed to setting aside €2.5 million to in- spect accommodation next year. The issue is to be dis-
cussed again at a full sitting of Cork County Council with a view to calling on the govern- ment to stronger penal- ties for rouge landlords.
