Almost One Third of East Cork Social Housing Allocated To People Outside The District
by SEAMUS WHELEHAN
Continued from front page The news comes as fig-
ures released to the East Cork Journal show that Midleton is the highest area of demand for social housing in East Cork. Based on demand, al-
most 3,000 new social houses are needed for homeless people in the East Cork and Cobh Municipal districts. The figures released
under Freedom of In- formation show that 853 people have expressed an interest in living in Mid-
leton. Carrigtwohill is the
next highest area of de- mand at 511, followed by Cobh at 493, Glanmire 384, Youghal 356 and Little Island 156. The County’s failure
to provide enough homes to meet demand is driv- ing up prices, rents and homelessness. In the
past
months 530 new appli- cants have joined the Lo- cal Authority Housing list which now stands at 4,771. Of those, almost 1200 are on the list less than one year, with 220 waiting over 10 years.
This year Cork Coun-
ty Council delivered only 10 new builds with a tar- get of 274 new units to deliver across the county by 2019. Last month Council-
twelve
lors criticised the Coun- cil’s new Choice Based Letting (CBL) scheme for housing people in ar- eas in which they have no connection. A first time housing applicant must firstly identify three areas of preference, and satis- fy the Local Authority that they have a link to those locations although, through CBL, people
from outside East Cork are allowed bid on hous- es here, while locals re- main on the list. While only half of
those eligible for social housing are logged onto the Council’s new hous- ing system, a third of houses given out in the Cobh and East Cork Municipal areas were to people from outside the area. The information ob-
tained through Freedom of Information has found that, of 47 homes given to those on the housing list, 16 were from outside the East Cork area.
