That Daily Commute by JOANNE DELANEY

We all know the dai- ly commute is boring, especially when you do the same drive day in and day out, you know the roads like the back of your hand and could potentially drive them with your eyes closed (Not recommended) but… Have you ever been driving down the road and suddenly become aware

that you don’t

know how you got there? It’s scary when you recognize you hav- en’t been paying atten-

tion for something as serious as manoeuvring a car for the last

miles. It makes you think,

think about all that you could be missing and what could have hap- pened in those few mins when you completely zoned out.. All the while knowing you were per- fectly conscious while driving and without an accident or incident.

We’ve all been there

before: you snap out of a daze, look around, and realize you’ve driv- en all the way to your

few

destination without re- ally noticing it. It’s a bit scary when you think about it, but it happens to all of us at some point. Here’s what’s go- ing on. The

idea that we

can forget about large chunks of time is un- settling, but it really just boils down to how we perceive time in gen- eral. In this particular case, it’s about how time and memories are formed together. And that’s of course happens during

what

a typical workweek or when you drive to work.

The Hand-y Tips by JOANNE DELANEY

Like your face, your hands function as bridg- es to the world. You shake hands when you meet or greet someone for the first time and when you seal a deal. Your hands express your affection to those

you

love. They soothe sad children and those suf- fering from illness. May- be you “talk” with yours. In any case, whenever you’re

interacting with

others, your hands will probably spend some

time in the spotlight. The problem is that

your hands are also es- sential tools. You use them for complex ma- noeuvres and daily chores.

And everyone is al-

ways telling you the importance of washing your hands. In the course of a day, your hands are exposed to all sorts of germs, dirt, harsh sub- stances, sunlight

and

more. To make mat- ters worse, the frequent washing that’s designed to keep your hands san-

itary also can keep them dry, cracked and wrin- kled, recently we tried “inis” hand soap and it was amazing smells so good, and its unisex 2 for the price of one ;)!!!!

You’re doing something that you do all the time. Time shrinks retrospec- tively. But if you go off for the weekend to some novel vacation, a place you’ve never been be- fore, then you look back and you think, “Wow that was a very long weekend!” The reason is simple: takes

the longer it for

our brain to process information, the longer the period of time feels. So, when the brain isn’t doing a lot of process- ing, like, say, on your commute to work that never changes, the time

If neglected, your hands’ skin may end up needing medical help. That said, your finger- nails (and your spirits) might benefit from a professional manicure now and then so treat yourself to something good this winter season Dark colours are so in this season.. I’m loving the deep maroon. Taking good care of

your hands doesn’t have to be a major produc- tion. There are things you can do every day to help your hands look and feel good. Develop a good routine and give your hands a helping hand – the Handmade

by JOANNE DELANEY Life really throws you

curveballs doesn’t it? I mean, come on! All

I want to do is diet, and I could swear someone is set on me not losing weight! Firstly, I would like to thank you all for your

Well what a roll- had..

Needless to say the diet went out the window! This week though,

this is going to be a brand new start for me, I promised myself

that

nothing else will get in my way so let’s see how this goes. There is some new

stuff happening for me this week, I won’t dis- close much but let’s just say I have managed to find some Motivation … Next week’s column is

going to be a very open book on me, It will give you an insight on exactly where I am in my weight and I’ll even give you my exact weight so you

it took to do so doesn’t feel that

long. One

study from the Journal of Consumer Psychol- ogy suggests that

the

more attention we pay to an event, the longer the

interval of time

feels. Another study from the Journal of the Association for Psycho- logical Science had sim- ilar findings. It makes sense too.

Think back to the last really great day you had. Chances are by the end of the day, you felt like full days had passed since you had breakfast. Now, think back to that morning commute. De- spite the fact you were actually stuck in con- gested traffic and bored

Soap Company do an amazing hand cream with sweet orange, basil and frankincense , the smell is incredible and it’s all natural and its 100% Irish made .

You’ve heard it a million times: Washing your hands is the best thing you can do to keep from spreading bac- teria, viruses and other nasty things to yourself, and from your- self to others. But a lot of make of

people the mistake

else. Today at 10.30am I an appointment

have

with someone I hope will change my life in a million ways, but

I

won’t keep you in the dark I promise.. All will be revelled next week.. Perhaps sooner if your following my story on Facebook. I’ve started to try and

better my mood daily, so when I’m feeling in any way stressed or just off I listen to positive vibra- tion music or positive thoughts I have found that this one of the best

ways to start your day. Instead of reading the paper and getting ham- mered with negative news and views on the world try watching or listening to one of your favourite personal devel- opment products. Read- ing works too, but listen- ing and seeing creates a more three-dimensional experience – with room for

tant

the always impor- body

language

and voice tonality to be included – and adds emotional power to the information. Some of my favourites

eastcorkjournal at the moment are the

audio version of The 4 Hour Workweek, just about any tape with Bri- an Tracy or watching a video by Eckhart Tolle. If I feel a bit down I just consume one of those sources for 15-20 min- utes. After that not only has my mood changed. I’m also just about al- ways reminded of some useful tip that I can use to improve my life. So that’s my tip of the

week..

I look forward to in- dulging you all with my life change next week!!

for much of it, it likely feels really short. Essentially, new expe-

riences make it feel like time passed more slow- ly. In the moment, that commute may have felt like it was taking forev- er, but when it’s done, it felt like it flew past in just a few prints of film in it to fill up a whole hour. When you play it back, you can watch the whole thing in 10 sec- onds. Now, think about that great vacation, all those memories fill up a lot more film, and thinking through those memories takes a lot longer than the com- mute. Effectively, that makes us perceive that time is actually extend-

grabbing the towel and tearing it across the skin until your hands are dry – thus irritating the skin and leaving you one layer short! When in re-

ed. So, how do you ac-

tually remember your commute? You’ll need to recalibrate your re- ality a little and pay attention to the world around you. As we’ve mentioned before, you can increase your pow- ers of observations with practice, and when you break out of your com- fort zone you’ll inevita- bly create a new set of memories that help you pass time better. Our at- tention is valuable, and when you use it to cre- ate memories, you’re ef- fectively making it seem like time stretches out. When you don’t, it just flies by like your boring commute.

ality a gentle pat works so much better and it’s much easier on your skin.. Less irritation all round! Problem solved!
