St Catherine’s And Brian Dillon’s In Cracking Draw
St Catherine’s 2-10 Brian Dillon’s 1-13
St Catherine’s and Brian
Dillon’s will have to meet again after the sides played out a thrilling draw in Pairc Ui Rinn last Sunday af- ternoon. John Horgan the Brian Dillon’s team captain had a long range 64th
min-
ute free to win it, but his ef- fort just fell short, much to the relief of St Catherine’s who faded badly in the sec- ond half. In the opening moiety looked the
St Catherine’s
better team and while John Horgan opened the scor- ing for Brian Dillon’s, St Catherine’s replied imme- diately with a point from Dan Mangan. The Saints’ captain then smacked in a goal with only two minutes on the clock. While Horgan converted two more frees for the city side, Brian Mulcahy had a superb point for St Catherine’s who led by 1-2 to 0-4 after the opening quarter with Tomas Law-
rence getting the first point from play for Brian Dillon’s. By half time St Cath-
erine’s had strengthened their position with Man- gan adding another point before finishing to the net after the initial effort from Brian Mulcahy was blocked down, Shane O’Brien from a free and Brian Mulcahy added further points before the break, while Brian Dil- lon’s had just one point from a John Horgan free as St Catherine’s led by 2-6 to 0-5 at the interval. On the resumption Bri- an Dillon’s came out with all guns blazing as they tore into the fray with Darragh
Rodgers slamming home a goal and three points from John Horgan and one from Colin Lynch, had the sides level by the 44th
minute.
Shane O’Brien from a free edged St Catherine’s back in front and points from Brian Mulcahy and sub Pa Roche looked to have steadied the ship as St Catherine’s were three clear once more. Brian Dillon’s had other
ideas with Rodgers point- ing, before
his side chances. They
three wides from half de- cent
had kept
plugging away and points from a free followed by one from play had the sides level once more. In the 61st
min-
ute John Horgan shot over a superb lead point for Brian Dillon’s with just three min- utes of injury time remain- ing. St Catherine’s were now chasing an equaliser as they earned a 63rd Shane
minute free. O’Brien made no
mistake to level once more, but there was still drama as Brian Dillon’s earned a free from their own 65. Team captain John Horgan was entrusted with the task and his well struck effort
just
lacked the distance with the final whistle sounding to bring a thrilling contest to a finish, with both side having to do it all again on Tuesday night.

Double Delight for Cork City FC
Cork City FC 1 (5) Dundalk FC 1 (3)
the Cup and League dou- ble at
Cork City FC completed the Aviva Stadium
on Sunday afternoon when they got the better of old nemesis Dundalk FC after an absorbing contest
that
was in the end decided by the dreaded penalty shoot- out. It was to be a great day for
the Leeside club as the Cork City Women’s side defeated
UCD Waves in the women’s cup final, with a magnificent Clare Shine goal deciding the issue in Cork’s favour. City, the Cup holders,
had the better of the open- ing half, but Gary Rodgers in the Dundalk goal proved equal to the efforts of Karl Sheppard and Stephen Dooley at one end while at the other Mark McNulty was equal to an early effort
from James McGrath. The second half was a
different matter as Dundalk began to get on top and for long periods Cork were forced to defend, but this they did very well with Alan Bennett and Ryan Delaney doing well at the centre of defence. Neither side could make the breakthrough al- though Gary Buckley came close for Cork right at the death but Gary Rodgers in the Dundalk goal did well to save and force the game to extra time. With both sides bringing players on the game began
to open a little with Dun- dalk winning a free close to goal. The ball was flighted perfectly by Michael Duffy with Dundalk centre-back Niclas Vemmelund rising high to head the ball into the top corner, past Mark McNulty in the Cork goal. It
remained 1-0 after the
opening period as Cork threw caution to the wind and attacked with gusto for the final period. Their pres- sure paid off as Sheppard chipped the ball forward with sub Achille Campion controlling, turning and shooting the equaliser past Gary Rodgers with eight minutes remaining. Could Cork or Dundalk get
winner was now the ques- tion, but neither side could break the deadlock and, so it was to penalties with Cork City up first. Karl Shep- pard, Greg Bolger, Conor McCormack and Steven Be- attie all had successful Cork efforts, while David McMil- lian,
Stephen O’Donnell
and Robbie Benson scored for Dundalk. It was then the turn of Michael Duffy, but Mark McNulty guessed correctly and produced a fine save. It was then the turn of sub Kieran Sadlier who blasted to the net
to the
give Cork the victory as they retained the Cup and com- pleted the League and Cup double for a very first time,
which is a richly deserved reward for John Caulfield’s Cork side. Cork City: Mark Mc-
Nulty, Steven Beattie, Alan Bennett, Ryan Delaney, Shane Griffin, Conor Mc- Cormack, Gearoid Morris- sey, (Greg Bolger 99) Jimmy Keohane (Kieran Sadlier 57) Gary Buckley (Achille Campion 99) Stephen Dooley and Karl Sheppard. Dundalk: Gary Rodg-
ers, Sean Gannon, Brian Gartland (Sean Hoare 91) Niclas Vemmelund, Dane Massey, Stephen O’Donnell, Robbie
Benson, Michael
Duffy, Patrick McEleney (John Mountnry 108) Jamie McGrath (Dylan Connolly0
and David McMillian. Referee: Paul McLaugh-
lin (Donegal) If the Cork men were
creating history, then so too were the Cork City women who were winning the cup for the very first time as they got the better of UCD Waves in what was another exciting final. It the end the goal scored by Clare Shine, her 18th
of the season was
enough to give Cork the title for the very first time. Cork: A Budden, D
Burke, C McNamara, M Duncliffe, N O’Toole, K O’Donovan, K McCarthy, S Ronan, M Bourque, D Sheehy and C shine. Subs used C Dring and L Kelly.
