November 2017 Table Quiz In Aid Of Hope Foundatio by ALAN SHEEHAN The table quiz fundrais-
er in Midleton in aid of sending two local students to India to work with the Hope Foundation was very successful this past Mon- day, 6 November. The fundraiser, hosted
by Wallis’ Bar and run by Higgins Quiz, saw approx- imately 60 take part with almost €1,000 raised on the night. The proceeds will
Laura O’Leary and Aoife Franklin who will to India with the Hope Founda- tion’s School Immersion Programme in April next year. As part of the Im- mersion Programme both girls, who are in fifth year in St Mary’s High School, Midleton, must each raise €2,400 for the Hope Foun- dation. “The night was very

divided evenly and go to- wards the fundraising ef- forts of Midleton students
good,” said Carol O’Leary, Laura’s mother. “We had 15 tables of four. The girls were well happy. We raised about €1,000. The raffle would have been a
big chunk of that. That’s thanks to the generosity of the local businesses. The cinema gave three sets of tickets for three prizes, so between them at the other seven businesses we raf- fled off nine prizes on the night. Thanks to
every-
body for all their supports and to all the business who donated prizes.” The Hope Foundation

Kolkata. HOPE funds and operates over 60 projects to
improve the quality of life for these children and sup- port the development of underprivileged

The Mercy Hospital Annual Raffle Raises Over €38,000 To Help Patients With Dementia At The Mercy
Over the past few
months, staff at the Mer- cy Hospital Foundation contacted hundreds of households across Cork City and County asking them to support the char- ity’s Annual Raffle which raised €38,000 which will be used to upgrade the Mercy University Hospi- tal to make it more de- mentia-friendly. The raffle draw took
place on Friday, October 27th
and the lucky winner
of first prize of €2,000 was Julia Hall from Shan- agarry, East Cork. Sec- ond prize of €500 went to Sean O’Callaghan from Donoughmore
in
North Cork. The winners were presented with their cheques by Micheál Sher- idan, CEO, Mercy Hospi- tal Foundation and Anne O’Hea, Occupational Therapist at the Mercy University Hospital. People with dementia
do not always find adjust- ment
easy, particularly
when in hospital with an illness. Through the An- nual Raffle and support from donors, The Mercy Hospital Foundation aims to help all patients feel safe and confident when they stay in the Hospital. The
biggest change,
thanks to funds raised through this year’s raf- fle, will be improved sig- nage so patients can find their way around easi- ly. The Mercy Hospital Foundation’s plan is for welcoming wall colours along with clear signs to orientate and direct pa- tients and visitors. Much better lighting will also be installed at the end of dark corridors. The mon- ey raised will transform bland areas with clear bright colours and direc- tions so patients feel less disorientated and afraid. Speaking about the up-
grades, Aine Harty RGN Staff Nurse at the Mercy University Hospital said “For people
suffering
from dementia, they can forget where they are and why they are in hospital. Disorientation and bewil- derment are a common experience
for people
with dementia and it can be very distressing and frightening. Everything around them is so differ- ent and unfamiliar, caus- ing them to feel quite con- fused and scared. Those people who supported the Mercy Raffle are helping make a real and mean- ingful difference to our el- derly patients by helping to create an environment that
ensures they feel
comfortable and happy during their time at The Mercy.” The annual raffle is just
one of many fundraising drives and initiatives un- dertaken by the Mercy Hospital Foundation. At the presentation of priz- es, Micheál Sheridan said “On behalf of all of us at The Mercy, I’d like to thank those who support-
ed our Annual Raffle – thank you for your time, energy and most impor- tantly, your support. Our mission is to inspire peo- ple to support advance- ments in research, diag-
nosis, treatments and care of patients at The Mercy University Hospital, the People’s Hospital. We promise to do our very best to provide you with a world class hospital, right
on your doorstep, and this is only possible through the help of our support- ers and donors, like those who buy, and indeed sell, tickets for our Annual Raffle.”
