East Cork Florists Organising First National Annual Irish Lonely Bouquet Day

by ALAN SHEEHAN East Cork’s florists are

invited to come together to take part in the first ever National Annual Irish Lonely Bouquet Day set for Monday, 27 November. The goal of such an

initiative is to dedicate a day to random acts of kindness, specifically through leaving bou- quets for strangers to find. Florists, hobby gardeners and flower lovers can all take part by gathering flowers (from florists, their gardens, or from nature), arrang- ing the flowers in a jar or tying them with twine,

adding a small note and then leaving the arrange- ment somewhere for a lucky stranger to find and take home. “We are looking to

make this an annual event,” said Pamela Dil- lon, of Absolute Flow- ers in Youghal and the primary driving force behind this upcoming event. “I am the admin of an Irish Florist Group and we have about 150 members. We are trying to gather more; all flo- rists, anybody is welcome to take part. The more we get the better. Basi- cally wherever the partic- ipants are they can make up their bouquets and

them put them out for about 7.30am on the day. We will then post pic- tures of where they are and people can go find them. We have a good few in the south involved in it already, including Eileen in Castlemartyr at the Village Florist, five shops in the city centre and one in Midleton.” The idea for an annual

national day in Ireland comes from the annual England-run Interna- tional Lonely Bouquet Day held on 25 June. “There is a national

day in England in the summer,” said Ms Dillon. “I saw it this year and thought it was a great

idea. I was looking for an opportunity to hold one, and managed to do so on the October bank holiday. It got a good re- sponse and we got good feedback. We are going to try and make it a na- tional and annual event, so we are looking to get more people involved and to remind them to shop local. Some florists offer discounts at Christ- mas, but it is up to them- selves which promotions they offer.” For more information
