East Cork Snooker CBSA Snooker Awards

by DEREK KIELY LAST Friday evening

the Cork Billiards and Snooker Association (CBSA) held their in- augural awards night in The Gallows Bar where five awards were present- ed to worthy recipients. The awards went

to

the Player of the Year in the Singletons A and B section, plus two presi- dency awards and a spe- cial merit award. The

ceremony was

opened by CBSA PRO Tony Murphy where he welcomed everyone who attended. CBSA Chair- man Karl Busteed then said a few words were he also welcomed every- one to the awards nights and announced the order the awards would be an- nounced The player of the year awarded

awards were

based solely on achieve- ments in Cork Snooker. The first award on the

night was the B Player of the Year described by CBSA’s Tony Murphy: “As a player with great temperament on and off the table and a very talented individual. Af- ter taking all the results from the league and the individual competitions into consideration, the decision was not an easy one but the winner is dedicated to the game.

He is always at the busi- ness end of tournaments challenging for silverware and this year he is mem- ber of the Singletons B League Champions and also the Cork Close B Champions a member of the team that won the Munster Snooker Club B Championship, a multi- ple ranking event winner on the national underage circuit, a semi-finalist in the Under 18 ESBA Championship. And all this at just 15 years of age, it is safe to say that this young man has a fantastic

future ahead

of him in the game and the award went to Aaron Hill.” The

second award

of the night was the A player of the year and CBSA Chairman Karl Busteed said: “This was an exceptional category this year and the winner was very hard to pick, the standard in the A section this year was exception- al. Unfortunately there can be only one winner. This man has achieved so much over the years in the game and is a gentleman both on and off the table, He was the captain of the winning team in the Singletons A League, was captain of the team that won the Orme Shield, member of the team that won the Scotch Doubles and also the Cork Close A Cham-

pion. He was the captain of the team that won the Munster Snooker Club Premier Championship and was in the last eight of the RIBSA Nation- al Championships’ The 2016/2017 CBSA A player of the year goes to David Cassidy.” The

the night was the hand- ing out of the 2nd

third award of CBSA

Presidency award and Karl Busteed spoke high- ly of the recipient: “What can I say about this recip- ient? He was a true gent on and off the table bust what made him truly spe- cial is that boy could he play. He gave so much to Cork Snooker over the years even as CBSA Chairman. His fundrais- ing and coaching was tru- ly spectacular. As young players we all looked up to this man, and it is with great pleasure that I pres- ent this award on behalf of the CBSA for his life- time dedication to Cork Snooker to the late great Mr. Liam O’Connor. The

fourth of the night went

award to

Brendan Cooney a true stalwart of the game. His dedication to snooker is truly remarkable, not only locally but national- ly and he has given time as a former chairman and also as a coach to the many young players that have come through the ranks. Cooney is highly

regarded and respected by every player in snook- er today not just in Cork, up and down the length and length of the coun- try.

The fifth and final

award of the night was the Special Merit award presented to Ross Bul- man who achieved a re- markable feat this season, CBSA PRO Tony

Murphy said: “The spe- cial merit award is being presented to a player who has achieved an amazing feat only a few weeks ago. He is a play- er who is never far from collecting silverware, is always at the business end of tournaments. He is a joy to watch play and on and off the baize is a gentleman of a sport. Where ever he goes you are sure to find his num- ber one supporter along- side him, his grandfather Mick. What this player achieved on the weekend of the 6th

- 7th of May has

never been done before and even for a player to qualify into four Nation- als finals is one thing but to go on and win all four of them is mind blow- ing. Ross is remarkable nine time National win- ner in just three years, he has numerous Cork titles, he was a member of the first ever team to win the Munster Snook- er Club B Championship Captain of the Youghal

Thursday, 25th

May 2017

CYMS team that won the 2016/2017 Under 17 Orme Shield, 2015 EBSA Under 18 Semi Finalist, Captain of the 2016 Celtic Challenge winning team against Wales and later this year will Captain Ireland in Home Internationals and will also play for Ireland in the Celtic Challenge in Carlow next month. All of this at only 15 years of age and the list goes on. He is a credit to his family and club, and we (CBSA) are

extremely

proud that we can say he is a member of our asso- ciation.

Finally CBSA would

like to extend their thanks and gratitude to Dave Cremin and the staff of the Gallows Bar for host- ing the night.

Munster Snooker Council elected

MUNSTER’S Snook-

er Council had their An- nual General Meeting recently in Fermoy at the Wagon Tavern’and look like a very strong council for the 2017/18 snooker season.

Amongst the members

elected is the most re- cently crowned Irish Sen- ior Snooker Champion Brendan O’Donoghue from Nenagh, so the in- fluence of on table ac- tivities will be positively supported by the Tipper- ary man and fellow Inter- national Tom O’Driscoll from Waterford. The council will be

chaired by Connie O’Sullivan who said: “It is vital that there is a very strong working Mun- ster council, because the game is booming in Cork and there is no reason why we can’t make that happen in the other five counties. I know it’s going to be a lot of hard work, but we have the right people in place to help that happen. We have a full list of tournaments as well for the coming sea- son and we will be look- ing to work with RIBSA and the Cork Billiards and Snooker Association (CBSA) to put our cal- endar in place. I can tell you there will be an In- ter County team event, two masters events, three ranked Interme- diate events, plus U15, U18 and U21 individ- ual snooker titles up for grabs and we are look- ing forward to a fantas- tic Finals Weekend next April, where there will be a weekend festival of snooker. I want to wish everyone happy holidays, but it won ‘t be long be- fore we are back in action with a fundraising Golf day at Beaufort golf club in Killarney on the 16th of September and play begins a week later. Snooker certainly has

been red hot in Cork this year, especially at under age level where the Rebel County took five out of six national titles and the Munster snooker coun- cil hopes to extend the game to the other coun-

ties and hope to bring in a Munster snooker coach to help guide and support young players in the game and encourage more to take up snooker. The Munster snook-

er council is a voluntary committee and will look to raise as much money as possible to help sup- port the game, coving charges and putting to- gether a grant applica- tion scheme. O’Sullivan explains: “The grant application scheme will be there to support clubs and players on request, but it will support clubs that have supported the Munster snooker council, it works both ways. One thing is for certain every cent raised will go back into Munster snooker and that has to be a good thing”.
