by ALAN SHEEHAN & CLAUDIA SHANAHAN O’KEEFFE

St Mary’s High School

Midleton held its annual prize-giving ceremony last Friday, 19 May. Over 100 awards, hon-

ours and certificates were given to students, staff and supporters of the school at

the ceremony

which has been held an- nually since 1987. “We had a wonderful occasion on Friday af- ternoon,” said Deputy Principal Mary Walsh. “Over 100 awards and certificates given to the students. The

awards

ranged from musical per- formance to sports per- formance

to performance

academic to artistic

talent. Students received certs

for leadership, ini-

tiative and volunteering for the local and wider community. We gave out awards for excellence in attendance, which were merit certs given out for making it to school every day.”

While signature awards, sponsored by subject de- partment, were presented to students for excellence in each subject area and it was announced that over €17,000 raised by students for charities this year, the students were

not the only ones hon- oured. “Denis O’Sullivan

from the Board of Man- agement,” said Deputy Principal Walsh, “was honoured for his service to the school for over 20 years. Also one of the Presentation Sisters was awarded for her longev- ity in religious life and support

for the school.

One parent awarded for the same support for the school as her first daugh- ter entered in ‘97 and her youngest daughter is sit- ting the Leaving Certifi- cate this year.” The Prize-Giving Cer-

emony featured enter- tainment and education as well as awards. Past pupil of St Mary’s, Anne Jones, was a guest speaker on the night. “Anne Jones, a past pu-

pil of ours, was a guest speaker,” said Deputy Principal Walsh. “She spoke of wellbeing and digital wellbeing, specif- ically on the need for us all to post only positive messages online. We also had entertainment which was varied and excep- tional. We would like to say thank you to all the parents, students, mem- bers of the board of man- agement and everyone who supported the school throughout the years.”
