35 Shanagarry Youth Club Sponsored Walk Raises €1,500 for Aaron’s Hope
by ALAN SHEEHAN & CLAUDIA SHANAHAN O’KEEFFE
Shanagarry Youth
Club’s sponsored walk raised approximately €1,500 for Aaron’s Hope last Friday, 19 May. The walk was held to
raise money for a local Shanagarry 16 year old, Aaron McMahon, who must
undergo special-
ised radiation therapy in Germany this summer to
treat a rare type of cancer. Members of Shanagarry Youth Club set into mo- tion the idea of a spon- sored walk just a week ear- lier on Friday, 12 May and the money raised for Aar- on exceeded expectations. “We had about 35-40 take part in it,” Gilsenan of
people said Carrie
Shanagarry Youth Club. “We had our own mem- bers and leaders of the youth club, some parents and other people involved who wanted to support
Aaron. We are waiting on a few cards to come back but I reckon it will exceed €1,500. That is much higher than we had even hoped for at
the start. It
was fantastic to raise more than we anticipated.” Aaron, a student
at
Midleton CBS Secondary School was diagnosed with chordoma, a rare type of cancer that is diagnosed in just one in one million people per year. Chordo- ma tumours occur in the bones
of the skull base
and spine, critical struc- tures which make them complicated to treat and 20% of the brain tumour following the surgery Aar- on underwent in March. Specialist
treatment in
Essen, Germany is needed to remove the remaining 20%. “Aaron lives in Shana-
garry,” said Ms Gilsenan, “and he would have gone to school with a lot of the lads in the club and he was member too up to last year. We knew he wasn’t
well for a little while and then his father put it up on Facebook that they had to urgently fundraise to get him to Germany for treat- ment. We had a meeting about how we could help and one of the boys, Jamie Scannell, suggested we do a sponsored walk.” Ms Gilsenan, on behalf
of the club, sent out their best wishes to Aaron and the McMahon family and thanked all those who sup- ported this fundraiser and will support future events
for Aaron’s Hope. “We wanted to do some-
thing for Aaron,” said Ms Gilsenan. “We wish Aaron and his family all the best from the club. We be thinking of
will them. We
would like to thank every- body who helped with the fundraiser in any way, and we would like to thank the kids for walking and Jamie for this idea.” The
sponsored walk
marks one of the upcom- ing fundraisers for Aar- on’s Hope, with the next
two taking place tonight, Thursday, 25 May. The CBS Secondary School in Midleton holds a concert from 7.30pm and Harty’s in Cloyne
night from 9pm. More
