Munster U-17 Football Championship Final Kerry 0-15 Cork 0-10

Kerry secured the first

Under-17 Football Cham- pionship in Munster when they confidently disposed of a disappointing Cork side in the final of the spe- cial Munster Under-17 Football championship fi- nal at Austin Stack Park. Cork opened well but Ker- ry’s supremacy soon came to the fold and they split the Cork defence open on several occasions to fashion a five point defeat against their old rivals. Cork had the better of

the opening exchanges with points from a Blake

Murphy free and one from play and a third point from roving mid fielder, Mark Keane all inside the open- ing four minutes. Kerry began to settle and Sean Doherty got the home sides opening score a minute lat- er. Cork were unfortunate to see a blistering kick from Conor McMahon come off the crossbar for what looked like a certain goal. Michael Slattery raised a second white flag for Kerry on 9 minutes and on 15 minutes the sides were level courte- sy of a Michael Kelleher point. Kerry gradually put

their stamp on the game and aided by strong wind blowing diagonally across the field, they added three further points from Dara Casey (0-1) and a pointed free and one from play from the influential Michael Kelleher. Cork’s next score came on the 24th

minute

when Mark Cronin slotted over a lovely point followed another point from cork captain, Blake Murphy. Both sides swapped points to let the score 0-8 to 0-6 in Kerry’s favour at the break. Kerry did to Cork what

Cork had done to Kerry in the opening minutes as they kicked three

points

in succession to put five points between the sides. Cork tried to use the wind

to their advantage but were not enjoying the same lux- uries their opponents en- joyed in the opening half as they kicked some bad wides in the opening fif- teen minutes of the second half. However all was not lost and Cronin and Conor Russell did add a point each to reduce the score but Sean Keane respond- ed again for the Kerrymen with a splendid point on the run to keep Cork at bay. Blake Murphy responded for Cork with a point and this score woke Cork up again but they could not counter Kerry’s work rate. Cork suffered a further set back when the hard work- ing captain, Blake Murphy, received a black card for a

pull down on the advancing Fergal Barry. Daire Cleary and Kelleher added a point each for Kerry as Mark Cronin kicked Cork’s last point on the 58th

minute

and so it ended with a vic- tory for the Kingdom. There were some un-

necessary ugly scenes both at half time and after the game which has no place in the game, especially at an underage game. Scores: Kerry: Michael

Slattery, Sean Keane 0-3 each, Michael Kelleher 0-3 (0-1f), Dáire Cleary 0-2, Franz Sauerland, Dara Casey, Sean Doherty and Barry Keane 0-1. Cork:

Saturday is

expected to be a win- ning outing against Wa- terford next

evening. To date Cork have had a mixed bag in the League without setting the world on fire, so Peader Healy’s side will go into this game knowing that

the per-

formance will be just as important as the result against a Waterford side that operated in the 4th division of the League. Tom McGlinchey’s Waterford side

will

hope to give a good ac- count of themselves and players such as Tomas O’Gorman, Stephen Prendergast, Patrick Hurney, Tommy Pren- dergast and Paul White will certainly give it their all on their home patch. I doubt that

it

will be enough against a Cork side determined to prove

themselves

and if James Loughrey, Thomas Clancy, Rory Deane, Mark Collins, Colm O’Neill and team captain Paul Kerrigan, play to form it is hard to see anything other than a comfortable Cork vic- tory.

strength in depth for the Waterford second team and again anything oth- er than a big Cork win would be a surprise.

Sunday May 28th in Pairc Ui Rinn SHC:

Carrigtwohill v Midleton at 2.15pm SHC: Glen Rovers v Sarsfields at 4.00pm The first of a double bill on Sunday after- noon is an all East Cork affair with Carrigtwohill taking on Midleton in the first round of the championship. Midleton will go into this game as the hot favourite, but in a local derby anything can happen. Players such as Padraig and To- mas Hogan, Pat O’Sulli- van, Darren McCarthy, Robert White and Mike Fitzgerald will certainly put it up to a Midleton side

that will include Conor Lehane, Killian

Burke and Luke O’Far- rell from the Cork set up while Paul Haughney, Seamus O’Farrell, James Nagle, Patrick White and Cormac Walsh should have too much firepower in this one and Midleton are taken to win what could be a hard-fought encounter. The

between former cham- pions Sarsfields and cur- rent holders Glen Rov- ers, who already have a win over Bride Rovers under their belt. This will certainly be a tough contest for the Glen who will look to Stephen Mc- Donnell, Patrick Horgan and Dean Brosnan from the Cork side along with the likes of Conor Dor- ris, David Noonan, Da- vid Cronin and Graham Callinan making it a

strong Glen Rovers side. Sarsfields will certainly relish this challenge and will put it up to the Glen as they have a strong side

to choose from.

Players such as Craig Leahy, Conor O’Sulli- van, William and Dan- iel Kearney, Tadgh Óg Murphy and Michael Cussen have all been here before and they will certainly mount a strong challenge in what I ex- pect to be a tight game. Glen Rovers will possi- bly shade it especially if Daniel Kearney is ruled out with an injury, but while Cian McCarthy has now departed to Douglas, Sarsfields will be determined to get off to a winning start.

SHC: in Midleton at 7.30pm Killeagh and Erin’s Own will go head to

head in Midleton on Sunday night and here again we have an all East Cork pairing that should bring a big crowd to the

Midleton ven-

ue. Last year’s defeat- ed finalist Erin’s Own will be fancied to win this one and if Shane Murphy, Jack Sheehan, Cian O’Callaghan, Ki- eran Murphy, Mossy and James O’Carroll along with Robbie O’ Flynn all play to form, they should come out on top. Killeagh have improved somewhat recent

in times and will

hope that Cian Fogarty, Padraig O’Brien, Alan Keniry, Andy Walsh, Ki- eran Lane, Shane Scully, Owen Keniry play to form and if they do then I expect them to certain- ly test the Caherlag out- fit, who are still taken to win.
