Corkbeg 3 Mallow Utd ‘A’ 4 A cracker of a game
in Whitegate on Sunday morning, as the top two teams in U-13Div4 went head to head in a battle royale. Corkbeg knew that a win would secure the league title with two games to spare, while league lead- ers Mallow needed to win their final league game to keep the pressure on Cork- beg before their final two games. Corkbeg were nervous
on the morning and quick- ly found themselves 2-0 down after only 10 minutes play; one was a long range strike and the second was a very well taken penal- ty. Pete Whyte and Mark Hogan had efforts on goal for Corkbeg and Aaron At- kinson, Cian Hegarty and Max Forbes looked lively for Corkbeg, but the North Cork side struck again before half time, with a stunning 25 yard shot to the top corner to leave the
well and 5 minutes into the second half, they found themselves 4-0
down
from some sloppy defend- ing. Typical of this team though, even though they were having one-of-those- days, they produced a tre- mendous comeback. It was still 4-0 to Mallow with 15 minutes minutes
left, but only 5 later, Mark Ho-
gan had struck a stunning hat-trick, with 3 brilliant finishes, to leave the score- line 4-3 with 10 minutes remaining. However, try as they might, Corkbeg could not grab an equaliser be- fore the finish, even though they camped themselves in the Mallow half for the re- mainder of the game and the league leaders ran out 4-3 winners. It’s still in Corkbegs
hands. Mallow are finished now and have a total of 30 points; 5 points ahead of Corkbeg. Corkbeg have two games remain- ing against Buttevant and Ringmahon and maxi- mum points in both games will see Corkbeg crowned champions. Good luck in
the final two games lads!
U16 CSL Div1 - Corkbeg 3 Macroom 3. The Beg U-16 squad
wound up their season and CSL schoolboy football journey with a thrilling 3-3 draw against old rivals Macroom. Leading 3-1 with 10
mins to go, the Beg will feel these were points that were let slip. In fairness to Mac- room, they played right to the final whistle and probably deserved their draw for effort. The Beg were minus their defensive rock Sean Devanney and star attacker Adam Laffan (both injured). The open- ing 15 mins were played in a torrential downpour and Macroom had the better of the opening exchanges. The Beg were having to defend for their
lives,
with Macroom dominat- ing the midfield exchang- es and forcing a series of early corners. It was no surprise when the visitors took the lead; albeit it was a soft goal. The Begs fight- ing spirit was soon back though and with captain
Max Ahern driving them on from midfield, they got back into the game with a somewhat
from Jamie
fortuitous goal O’Hanlon,
who blocked down a clear- ance from the Macroom keeper for the ball to re- bound into the net. It was just reward for pursuing a lost cause. The beg now took con-
trol and played some love- ly flowing football . A de- lightful Brendan Jilal pass was instantly controlled by Jamie and lifted over the keeper for a peach of a goal to put the Beg 2-1 up approaching half time. The second half was even- ly contested and we felt a third goal might finally kill off the visitors threat: Jack Norris up for a corner was on hand to nod home after the keeper failed to hold a shot from Max. At 3-1, the Beg were looking good and could indeed have added to the lead, but a defensive lapse left a Macroom attacker in the front door and all of a sudden, it was 3-2 with eight minutes to go. Both sides kept attacking, but it was Macroom who got the reward when another de- fensive error was punished to leave it 3-3 at the final whistle. Overall, this result
leaves the Beg hovering on the fringes of a top four finish which is a remark- able achievement having just escaped relegation last year and losing 5 players from the squad at the start of the season . The game marked the
end of a football journey for the squad with U-16 the final year at CSL lev- el. Its worth reviewing the footballing
of these players will merge with our U-18 panel for a tilt at the Youths league Div1 next season.

The Soccerthon marks the end of the schoolboys season and all outstanding awards, including ‘’Player Of The Year’’ awards and ‘’Most Improved Player’’ awards are presented to our schoolboys teams on the day. It is also one of our biggest fundraisers of the season, with each school- boy/schoolgirl asked to fill out a sponsorship card in the weeks leading up to the big day. The cards are cur- rently being distributed to all our underage members. It’s usually a lot of fun, with face-painting, Ice- Cream Vans, special guests and fun games taking place throughout the afternoon. See you all there!

and
completed the job by land- ing the league title. Well done to all concerned!
