Durdle Dor

Purbeck to Christchurch F

rom Dorchester to the Isle of Purbeck the towns, villages and hamlets have their own idiosyncrasies, anomalies and attractions. To appreciate the area, a tour will not disappoint. Take a look at Moreton to see St Nicholas Church, with its etched glass windows and Moreton Gardens. Just south of the village are the tranquil Tadnoll and Winfrith Heaths. Te Jubilee Trail, Lawrence Trail and Lawrence Cycle Ride pass through Moreton. Nearby Clouds Hill was the home of Lawrence of Arabia. Te Lawrence Trail starts at the Tank Museum and follows the history of T.E. Lawrence.

Going toward the coast, Winfrith Newburgh and Chaldon Herring (also known as East Chaldon) are

two small villages in the south west of Purbeck, close to the Purbeck Way West linking Winfrith Newburgh to Coombe Keynes and Wareham to the east, with West Lulworth, Lulworth Castle and Lulworth Cove to the south. Te South West Coast Path from Chaldon Herring leads to Durdle Door with its iconic arch and sandy beach.

West Lulworth is where you will find Lulworth Cove with eateries, boat trips and kayaking, a short walk to the South West Coast Path brings you to Durdle Door. Lulworth Castle and Park, with its beautiful grounds and chapel is found in East Lulworth. Cycling from Wareham on the East Lulworth Ride is popular. Tere is an extraordinary cliff top lake named Stair Hole

and the beaches are superb. More information can be obtained from the Visitor Information Centre at Lulworth Cove.

Another gateway to the Isle of Purbeck is Wareham. Te focal point of this market town is its quay, once a busy bustling place and a port for large ships under sail, now it is one of the most relaxing places in Purbeck. Tere are boat trips, craft to hire, many shops a farmers market every fourth Tursday at the Corn Exchange, plus a market on the Quay every Saturday.

Near to the Quay the PURBECK INFORMATION AND HERITAGE CENTRE hosts a mine of visitor information. At the main cross-roads there is the small but fascinating Town Museum

with an interesting section on T. E. Lawrence works. Te Saxon walls that still surround the town are an interesting walk. A highlight of the walls is the church of St Martins, which contains early medieval wall paintings and an effigy of Lawrence of Arabia.

Nearby at Longhorn is the world famous MONKEY WORLD APE & RESCUE CENTRE. Tis is the largest facility of its kind in the world, rescuing primates from the illegal pet trade in the UK and the world. Tere is an active rehabilitation and conservation programme funded by charity. Tere are organised tours, a gift shop, cafe and things to do for the children.
