Salisbury Plain

Stonehaenge W

estbury is a gateway to the wilderness of Salisbury Plain, with its steep river

valleys and hidden thatched villages. Overlooking the town, above the White Horse, is Bratton Hill Fort, a typical Iron Age structure with an ancient long barrow burial mound dating back to around 3000 BC. From Bratton Hill the views over the Wiltshire countryside are spectacular with an escarpment ideal for hang-gliders. Tere are many walks around the area, also fishing ponds in Dilton Marsh and Brokerswood. Te All Saints church, in the town, has the third loudest peal of bells in the world and has an unusual faceless clock made in 1604. Te grand indoor Victorian swimming pool built in 1887 is quite unlike its modern equivalent.

When in this area, take a look at Mere where for the nearby STOURHEAD HOUSE. When Stourhead first opened in the 1740s, a magazine described it as

‘a living work of art’. Te world- famous landscape garden has, at its centrepiece, a magnificent lake reflecting classical temples, mystical grottoes, and rare and exotic trees, and offers a day of fresh air and discovery.

Within a short distance of the many scenic and historic attractions of the county, the town of Warminster has many popular events including: a street fair, carnival, half-marathon, flower show, and a bi-annual festival in addition to the usual fetes and attractions. Within a few minutes walk of the town centre there is: a boating lake, putting green, hard tennis courts and a children’s playing field. For local history, the Dewey Museum has changing displays, geological specimens, an enquiry service, shop and monthly guest speakers.

Te surrounding villages have events such as the Oak Apple Day celebrations at Great Wishford, the

Corsley Show, and the Heytesbury Extravaganza. Longleat Safari Park has a calendar of events including: the Last Night of the Proms, a balloon fiesta and the annual horse trials. Details and dates of all events are available from the Visitor Centre.

Great Wishford is a small village in the Wylye Valley about 3 miles north of Wilton and 5 miles northwest of Salisbury. Most people associate the village with Oak Apple Day on May 29th, when villagers get up in the early hours to collect oak boughs from nearby woods. Te occasion marks an ancient decree that allows residents to collect wood from Grovely Woods. Te day includes a trip to Salisbury, dancing in the Cathedral Close, and brass band music back in the village. In September there is the Great Wishford Run of 3k or 10k. Tis popular day includes a great DAY OUT in the lovely surroundings of Grovely Woods. When in the

village make sure to visit the ROYAL OAK pub.

THE ROYAL OAK is a traditional country pub offering a wide selection of beers, ales, lagers and ciders as well as a carefully selected list of wines. Tis combined with our amazing food menu, creates a great welcoming atmosphere for all our guests. Te pub has Quiz and Club nights, plus an Open Microphone Night which attracts a stream of solo artists and bands. Te pub supports the yearly historical “Oak Apple” day including other local supporting events. Tere is a carvery and dining areas, plus catering for weddings, special parties, funeral wakes, business functions, birthday and anniversary celebrations. Free parking is at the rear of the pub, and we are situated off the A36 between Salisbury and Warminster.
