Shepton Mallet is a town with many tourist attractions in the surrounding area, and is close to Bath and Wells. Te town is a delightful mixture of an old market town with modern amenities. In the town centre there is a fifty foot high 16th century structure that was used to hang the unfortunates who came before the “Hanging Judge” Jefferies. Nearby is the restored Victoria Fountain, and a 15th century covered market houses a busy market every Friday.
Tourist entertainment in and around Shepton include: the annual Mid-Somerset Show held on fields on the edge of the town, the World of Churches Festival is a four day festival. Te Great Steam Fair, the Godney Gathering and the four day long Royal Bath And West Show are all held in the town, or within a few miles. Te Glastonbury Festival is held at nearby Pilton.
To add to all of the things to do in and around Shepton Mallet to entertain the kids, the HULLABALOO SOFT PLAY CENTRE in Townsend Road is a place for the whole family to enjoy. Children 0–12 will have a great time, whilst parents can relax in the cafe, read the paper, catch up on emails or shop online. Tere is a special padded pit for the very young with seating for parents, toddlers have an assault course amongst many other things to try, and for the older children, the fun is endless.
Frome’s attractions include ancient Cheap Street, noted for its historic shop buildings and the small stream that runs down its centre. Frome Bridge is one of only a handful of bridges in the world that are lined with shops actually on the bridge itself. Rook Lane Chapel is regarded as one of the most spectacular buildings in the West Country, and the Blue House (known as the Blue School), due to the colour of the school’s uniforms, is also interesting. Te Merlin Teatre is a unique theatre built on a steep hillside, and the ECOS Amphitheatre is where a number of big stones form a semi- circle around the open-air stage.
Due to a number of important festivals and events throughout the year, Frome is interesting at any time. Tings to see, do and visit include: the Frome Festival, involving events at venues across the town. Te Frome Cheese & Agricultural Show is one of the most important events in this part of Somerset, and there are many different guided town walking tours. Te Tourist Information Centre has details and dates of events and town tours.
A few miles from the town are the picturesque villages of Nunney, Farleigh and Hungerford with their romantic ruined castles. Beckington and Rode also have many features of historic interest, including fine parish churches. At Longleat Forest, near Frome, the Longleat Safari Park and Longleat House, apart from the animals, there is a range of fun-packed family attractions and acres of Capability Brown landscaped grounds.
In any part of the Mendip’s countryside it is not unusual to see people horse riding, picnicking, camping, cycling, taking in the breathtaking views and generally enjoying the open air.
