Te bustling market town of Devizes is famous for its Caen Hill Locks of the Kennet & Avon Canal, and the Wadworth Brewery. Te town hosts a local market each Tursday which proves popular with visitors and residents alike, a perfect excuse to visit this wonderful town for a day out! Devizes is ideally located just 18 miles from Stonehenge and 20 miles from the City of Bath, and has numerous public transports routes from Salisbury and surrounding areas.

Devizes is the administrative centre for the KENNET & AVON CANAL. Tis historic market town has a rich heritage of fine Georgian houses and the award winning Wiltshire Heritage Museum. A 19th century castle built on the site of a Norman stronghold is worth a visit. For those interested in a brewery the Wadworth Brewery Visitor Centre and Guided Tours is a pleasurable experience.
Te Royalist forces defeated Cromwell’s troops at Roundway Down and during the
summer months, colourful re-enactments of the battle are great entertainment. Te Devizes Festival is in June, the colourful Food and Wine Festival in July, the Devizes Carnival in late August/ early September and there are a variety of other events throughout the year.
Te KENNET & AVON CANAL TRUST maintains and enhances the waterway. Te Trust also collates funding via campaigning, and relates the history, awareness and potential of the canal via the Trust’s museum, pumping stations, shops, boats and branch networks.
Te surrounding countryside offers stately homes, picturesque villages, attractive waterways and fantastic walking and cycling in stunning scenery. Tis is also the focal point for the surrounding villages of: All Cannings, Bishops Cannings, Bromham, Easterton, Erlestoke, Etchilhampton, Great Cheverell, Little Cheverell, Market Lavington, Marston, Potterne, Poulshot, Roundway, Seend, Stert, Urchfont, West Lavington, and Worton.
Rowde village is just a mile or so north west of Devizes with the Rowde Ford Stream which rises near Roundway Down, on the Rowde and Bromham boundary. When in this area, or if you want somewhere to use as a base for exploring Wiltshire, be sure to visit the GEORGE & DRAGON INN.

THE GEORGE & DRAGON in Rowde is a quaint hidden gem. Tis 16th century coaching inn combines modern day style with bundles of country character and great food. Tere is a is well stocked bar with an ever changing selection of local craft beers, a restaurant and B&B with 3 individually designed bedrooms and a wonderful garden. Te restaurant specialises in a wide range of Cornish seafood delivered daily from St Mawes. On blackboards above the bar you will find a variety of fresh fish and shellfish. Te A-la carte menu also offers choice for meat and game lovers, plus vegetarian dishes. Our popular set menu available daily (apart from Friday and Saturday nights) is £16.50 for 2 courses and £19 for 3. Sunday is a set menu of 3 courses including a roast dinner

About three miles south of Devizes, the historic village of Potterne has one of the oldest timber-framed dwellings in England, the Porch House circa 15th century. Once through Potterne, there is only West Lavington before the rolling two hundred square miles of Salisbury Plain.
Trowbridge has a thriving arts scene, which includes: an annual Arts Festival; a biennial Cloth Road Arts event which alternates with the museum’s Textile and Weaving Festival; an Armed Forces Weekend; a Sports Festival and a Country Fair. Te TROWBRIDGE MUSEUM has history of the woollen industry and a working loom. Tere is a modern library and a town trail to see the mills and the houses of the mill owners. To the east of the town you can relax in the ancient woodlands of Green Lane Wood. Tere are barges for hire to cruise the Kennet and Avon canal, and fishing is a major attraction. For golfers there is a collection of courses. Tis is a busy town for commerce, but it is also a fun place to visit.
TROWBRIDGE MUSEUM is one of Wiltshire’s finest history museums and the county’s only specialist textile museum. With nearly 19,000 objects including over 5,000 photographs in our collection we welcome 22,000 visitors and 3,000 schoolchildren a year. In conjunction with the town library there will be Magna Carter celebrations in the summer. Tis museum is fun, friendly and Free.
Just south of Trowbridge on the A361 is the HOPE NATURE CENTRE at Southwick Country Park, Frome Road, Southwick there is a Registered charity created for adults with learning difficulties who help run Squirrels Tearoom and Animal Park. Te Animal Park contains a variety of animals from Alpacas to Parrots, set in 15 acres of attractive grounds. Open 7 days a week 8:30 am - 4:30 pm.
