he English Riviera has a new road from the Devon Express Highway, so is now much easier to visit its towns and villages. Babbacombe and St Marychurch has stunning sea views over Lyme Bay and a stroll along Oddicombe Beach to Babbacombe Beach is a delight. Te quay at Babbacombe is popular with anglers and the beaches have diver training and scuba centres. Coastal paths are scenic and to enjoy is the Babbacombe Cliff Railway, Babbacombe Teatre and Babbacombe Model Village. Plus the usual places to stay eat and shop. St Marychurch is a compact town with many independently owned shops in an attractive precinct.
Torquay is a haven of yachting, café culture and shopping with a
picturesque harbour, restaurants, bars, night clubs and other types of indoor entertainment. A stroll through the beautiful Princess Gardens, towards Torre Abbey Sands and along the promenade, will take you to the Royal Terrace Gardens where an illuminated staircase leads up to a viewing platform with views across the Bay. To see the resort from an aerial aspect there is a Big Wheel.

Historic Torre Abbey and gardens offer an insight into 800 years of history and the Agatha Christie Potent Plant Gardens, where there are state-of-the-art exhibitions, galleries, family trails and activities for the children. Other places to visit are: Kents Cavern, with prehistoric Stone Age caves, the Living Coast on the sea front, and Cockington Village, the world famous thatched village. Cockington Court is a 17th century manor house in a country park and home to a number of craft studios.

A short stroll from the harbour is Torquay Museum containing Hercule Poirot artefacts and the country’s only permanent Agatha Christie Gallery with regular exhibitions, and the kids will love the Interactive Explorers Gallery, not to mention the legendary Agatha Christie Festival every September. Te Princess Teatre has top names in seasonal shows, plus in and around the resort there are a number of smaller venues with shows and some live music.

Te fishing port of Brixham is not all about fish, but this influence is evidenced on the quay and at the Brixham Heritage Museum. To taste the local catch, try one of the town’s cafés or restaurants.
