North Dartmor
Okehampton has the Museum of Dartmoor Life with ancient relics, and the history of Dartmoor people, with the ruin of Okehampton Castle being a short distance from the town centre. A plethora of places to eat and stay are too many to mention, but Betty Cottles Inn is good value.
Tere is also the Fountain Inn, with good reviews. Te town is a gateway to Dartmoor, and useful as a base to explore the surrounding villages, such as: Folly Gate, Inwardleigh and Abbeyford Woods.
South Dartmor
On the A38 Expressway, Ashburton is an ideal holiday destination for Dartmoor, the coast and Devon’s two cities. With fantastic scenery, and opportunities for walking, cycling, pony trekking, canoeing and fishing, this part of Dartmoor is very popular. Ashburton Carnival week starts at the end of June, there is also the Fun Run, the Duck Race at Cleder Place, and the Party In Te Park: dates can be obtained from the Tourist Information Centre.
Seale-Hayne is a beautiful and vibrant place where everyone is welcome. From the Children’s Trail and Outdoor Activities for younger visitors to the warm hydrotherapy
pool and therapies in the Health and Wellbeing Centre, regular art exhibitions in the Gallery, delicious meals served in the Bistro all day, and wonderful gifts in the Shop. Tere is so much to see and do. All funds raised at Seale-Hayne go towards helping young people with a range of disabilities.
Nearby, is the hamlet of Holne, where the River Dart runs between steep banks, wooded hills, medieval bridges and excellent hotels and restaurants.

town is also known for the Valiant Soldier Visitor Centre, shops and places to eat. Local events include: Lamb Pie Day in the spring and the May Fun Day. Attractions include: the SOUTH DEVON RAILWAY, and the TOTNES RARE BREEDS FARM. Adjoining this is the Butterfly and Otter Sanctuary. Nearby, is the old racecourse with various events and Pennywell Farm, which is popular with children. Te Seatrout Inn, at nearby Staverton, has rooms and a restaurant with river views. TOTNES RARE BREEDS FARM is a fantastic day out! A family owned attraction small enough to provide a friendly and personal service, but with enough to keep its visitors occupied and happy all day. Once you have found this secret haven once, getting here becomes very obvious. If it is your first visit and you are ever unsure, please follow the signs all the way to South Devon Railway (there are many). We are adjacent to their platform and there are joint tickets for the railway. See our website for details.
Okehampton Castle
Sticklepath has the Finch Foundry, being the last working water-powered forge in England. Nearby, South Zeal is home to the award winning 12th entury Oxenham Arms Hotel. South Tawton has a Heritage Visitor Centre and the Seven Stars for food.
Belstone is known for Belstone and Oke Tors. Yes Tor, High Willhays, with Cosdon Hill and Wild Tor nearby providing challenging walks. Try the delightful Belstone to Rowtor Walk, and when in need of refreshment, the Tors Inn is just metres from the village.
Te villages of Torndon Cross and neighbouring Meldon, with its picturesque valley and reservoir, are delightful. Sourton is a pretty village below Sourton Tors and home to the historic Highwayman Inn. Bridestow, overlooked by the majestic Great Links Tor, is a large village to use as a base to explore the Moor, and nearby in the hamlet of Lake, where the Bearslake Inn is worth a visit.
