Gateway to West Cornwall

Falmouth F

almouth is a tourist town with beaches, parks, gardens, a superb waterfront, and

the picturesque Fal Estuary. It is home to the National Maritime Museum, and a large number of galleries. One of the oldest streets in Falmouth, is High Street, which contains the old Falmouth Town Hall, and an eclectic mix of boutiques, independent shops, hidden courtyards, openways, and a booth to book river cruises etc. Arwenack Street, and ‘Te Moor’ also contain a mixture of restaurants, cafes and pubs, plus shops selling just about everything. Te hotels, inns and guest houses are predominately toward the back of the town. Being a busy town with an industrial dockyard with large ships and umpteen pleasure craft to see on the river, plus a successful university there is always plenty going on to interest visitors.

Close to the National Maritime Museum, and right on the harbour front, is the iconic TRAGO MILLS. Tis is the smallest of the three Trago stores but you’ll still find thousands of bargains across a huge range of products.

Falmouth hosts a variety of major sailing and other events like the Fal River Festival, International Sea Shanty Festival, Armed Forces Day, Henri Lloyd Week ,and Splash Week. Attractions include the Princess Pavilion, offering a wide programme of entertainment. Key visitor sights include: Pendennis Castle (Cornwall’s largest fortress). A few miles out of the town there are several Golf courses, where visitors are welcome. A programme of all Falmouth’s events can be obtained from the Visitor Centre.

Te main family beaches are Castle Beach, situated alongside Pendennis point. Te Blue Flag Gyllyngvase Beach is within a few miles of the town centre. Swanpool Beach is in a delightful cove, with adjoining Swanpool Lake Nature Reserve, and Maenporth Beach. Each has a cafe and shop.

A great DAY OUT, is a boat trip up the Fal Estuary, to see picturesque gardens and dolphins etc., and to call at water front pubs. Going up the river, there is Mylor Harbour, once a naval dockyard, now a centre for water sports businesses, a marina, yacht club, restaurant and cafe. Further on, is the famous Trelissick Garden. Next stop is Malpas, and then creeks to explore on the way up the wooded river valley towards Truro. On the opposite bank of the river is the Roseland Peninsula.

Another DAY OUT is a boat trip up the Helford River, to watch seals and dolphins. Visit the villages of Helford, Mawgan, Manaccan, St Anthony, and Gweek, home to the acclaimed Seal Sanctuary. Tere are also more secluded villages, subtropical gardens, and waterside taverns to discover. Take a look at the mysterious winding inlet of Frenchman’s Creek to appreciate why it attracted Daphne Du Maurier. Te creek and much of this area is best reached by foot.
