near the Dart Estuary, and the sixteen mile Dart Valley Trail which runs close to both sides of the River Dart. Another place to visit is the Start Point Lighthouse. Also, nearby is Berry Pomeroy Castle complete with ghosts and Blackpool Sands is near the village.


Dartmouth, lying on the River Dart, is one of the most popular and picturesque tourist destinations in Devon, with the main attractions along the waterfront. Te narrow mouth of the River Dart has two castles: Dartmouth and Kingswear, with the latter being open to the public.


Dartmouth is a town of ancient narrow streets, a mad hotchpotch of architectural styles with creatures of myth, filled with a cornucopia of artistic talent and bursting with English eccentricity. Dartmouth has uniquely charming shops, a host of gourmet restaurants and quirky historical hostelries. Te activities and attractions in and around the town are plentiful. Visit Kingswear Castle, or Coleton Fishacre to travel back in time to the Jazz Age. You can lose yourself in the RHS accredited garden, walk paths that weave through glades past tranquil ponds. Laze on clean beaches, walk the South West Coast Path, explore the local countryside, enjoy the Dart Music Festival, or the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta. Take a trip on the Dartmouth Steam Railway, or a pleasure cruise on the River Dart. Tere are many other events on and off the river, but whatever your choice, Dartmouth is geared for tourism so your visit will be memorable. Nearby, Woodlands Teme Park provides a whole day of variety for all ages.


Across the river from Dartmouth, the village of Kingswear has panoramic views of the harbour and river Dart. Tere are several pubs and inns offering scenic vistas of the river, walkers can try the Dart Valley trail from Kingswear to Greenway. For scenic trips to the attractive area of Dartmouth and Kingswear, the TORBAY EXPRESS is a Sunday service operating during the summer from Bristol Temple Meads railway station.

At the widest part of the River Dart, Dittisham is where, at high tide, the water stretches for over a mile to Galmpton on the far shore. Visitors to the village will have no difficulty with sailing or boating, fishing is very popular with eleven miles of river. Nearby is an area known as Tuckenhay, where some of the finest food

To visit a vineyard with a tranquil river trip, the Sharpham Vineyard is a two-hour trip starting from Steamer Quay. Other places to visit are: Totnes Castle, Elizabethan House, Museum of Costume, Te Town Mill and Totnes Image Bank, to name just a few of the things to do in this South Devon surprise. Near Totnes at Buckfastleigh are the South Devon Railway and the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm attractions (Please see the Dartmoor chapter for both of these attractions). Just outside of Totnes is the Dartington Hall Estate with live events, exhibitions and festivals, shops, extensive grounds and gardens. All of the above plus river trips on the River Dart, museums, a steam railway and art galleries etc. make Totnes an interesting town to visit.
