built 35% bigger than it should have been was met with disapproval by Pembrokeshire Coast National Park members on Wednesday, February 8. The Park’s Development Management

Committee were presented with a retrospective planning application for the garden room/study at Square Farm but it has caused much anger in the community. The matter was first dealt with by the

Park in 2012 when approval was given for the refurbishment of an existing cattle barn. However, developers have built the barn

to a much larger size and despite concerns from residents, the National Park failed to . Cllr Reg Owens said that this was a

‘deliberate attempt to put two fingers up to the National Park’ and that it was ‘pre-fabricated’. It was also revealed that the Park’s

Planning Officer wrote a letter of apology to Marloes and St Brides Community Council after the Monitoring Officer found there had been a delay in response to the matter. The application had been recommended

for approval but it was eventually decided that members should visit the site themselves to see the new building. Speaking against the application,

Community Cllr Peter Smithies said that the inaction of officers amounted to a dereliction of duty and that the new build should have been a direct replacement of what was there already. Cllr Owens said: “This has not been

the finest hour for the National Park. This application, after a lot of consideration in 2012, brought objections from the Community Council and local residents, however, it was passed and that was fair enough.

“But, when it was built, it was

considerably bigger than the original application and the National Park was alerted but more or less ignored them. Correspondence wasn’t answered and it was diabolical how they were treated, so much so the Monitoring Officer upheld their complaint. “There is considerable objection in

Marloes to this building and there are a group of residents who are really angry about this and it is impossible to defend the National Park.

“This oversized building wasn’t a

mistake by the builders, it was pre-fabricated and when locals said to them that this was bigger than it should be, they found it quite funny. “If we approve this, we’re going to lose

a lot of standing and our reputation. We’ve got to stand firm on this and I strongly recommend that we refuse this and that the developer put the building back to the size he had planning permission for.” Cllr Mike James added: “I’ve not got

much confidence in this applicant about doing anything after the way he has acted so far. We can add a condition of landscaping but he might just brush it aside so I can’t support the application.” Other members said they could support

the application but only if certain conditions were imposed. Having listened to the debate, Cllr Reg

Owens invited members to visit the site and see the impact of the building on neighbouring properties. The site visit was supported with eight

votes in favour and three against, and that will take place on February 27.

THE CITY of St Davids may

not have a carnival this year after it was revealed that nothing has been booked for the event. It was discussed at a meeting of

the City Council on Monday, February 6, where the clerk to the council said that everything was usually booked in January or February. The Mayor said that no letter had

been sent to the Carnival committee and that the Penknife club did not

Carnival 2016: The Mayor with special guest Jasmine Joyce at last year’s carnival

seem willing to take any action. Cllr Chris Taylor added: “I may

have to call a public meeting if there is no progress with the Carnival committee. If nothing is done there won’t be a carnival this year.” Councillors asked if a letter could

be sent to see if something could be done but the Mayor said they could not do that. The St Davids Peninsula Carnival Facebook page has repeatedly asked if

anyone would be able to help out with the event in order to keep the carnival going.

The previous chair, Keeley, has

stood down from the role and the committee needs a new member to take over. Keeley told the Herald: “It will be very sad for the community if it doesn't go ahead.” The popular event is scheduled to

take place on August 26 but that is yet to be confirmed.
