28 Community TOP game of the Haverfordwest
Coin Machine Sponsored Pembroke & Pembroke Dock quiz league this week was at the Golf Cub where the visitors from the Alma were trying to revive their championship aspirations and this they achieved. Despite dropping behind on the
News round they won every other round to win convincingly with the night‘s top score. League leaders Charlton B
entertained the First & Last A in a top verses basement encounter and in a strangely low scoring first round of In the News the Charlton bagged one extra point to end the round 11-10 in front. In the second round Around London
neither team got to grips with the capital but due to Brian’s knowledge the F & L stole an additional bonus point to end the round level pegging. The third round on music continued
the low scoring theme with neither team demonstrating any chart topping success, the Charlton however proved the better Boy Band gaining an extra team question to enter the break 34-31 to the good. The Ding Bat picture round proved
Rainy day: Spirits weren’t dampened by the weather AFTER the heavy rain of the
previous day, clear skies were a welcome sight as 20 Ramblers set out from Carew on Saturday, February 4, for a 7 mile circular walk. The first part of the walk was via
Carew Cheriton to Milton, visiting the air crew war graves and the site of the old Carding Mill. From Milton it was back to the
French Mill at Carew then through fields and country lanes passing to the east of West Williamston to Cresswell Quay where lunch was taken. After lunch the return route was
again through fields and country lanes via Carew Newton quarry, back to Carew castle at 3pm. Refreshments were then taken at the Carew Inn just ahead of the return
of heavy rain. The route is well signed and
maintained by Pembroke Coast National Parks, although muddy in places which can only be expected for the time of year and the recent weather conditions. The next Ramblers walk is from
Narberth main car park at 10.30 on Sunday (Feb 12).
INSPIRED by local fundraisers
Dawn and Denise Davies, Tenovus Cancer Care, Wales’ leading cancer charity ,will be holding the Dragon Drop Abseil event in March. In memory of Dawn’s Dad, Eric,
Dawn and Denise abseiled down Pembroke Castle's keep in October 2015, raising £784 for the charity. Eric was diagnosed with Prostate
Cancer in 2007 and was helped by staff from the Tenovus Cancer who were able to offer support and advice. Despite his strength and
positivity, Mr. Mathias sadly passed away late last year. Even with physical disabilities,
Dawn scaled the 75ft keep, taking on the challenge alongside her mother- in- law Denise, who has a fear of
heights. When discussing the abseiling
challenge Dawn said that her dad’s diagnosis wasn’t the easiest for Mr Mathias or the family. She said: “There were plenty of
ups and downs but life was made easier for us by having support provided by the ManVan. We’re so grateful to all those people who donated so we could help Tenovus Cancer Care keep giving help to people who need it.” Mhairi Jones, Running and
Challenge Events Manager, said that people choose to do amazing things to show support for or in memory of a loved one. “I’m always in awe of these brave people like Dawn and Denise
who push their limits to help others. They’ve inspired us to hold this event and will no doubt inspire others to take part. It’s the first time we’ve done something like this in West Wales and we’re looking forward to it.” The event is for those aged 6+
and is a family experience with a difference. To get involved in the Dragon Drop Abseil, contact the Fundraising Team on 02920 768850 or visit

perplexing to both teams but the Charlton got their hole in one to stretch their lead going into the penultimate round. With the last team round on
Royalty, the home side demonstrated the tremendous teamwork and love for regal trappings by getting all of their team questions right and a bonus to further stretch their advantage to 66-50. The F& L were now floundering
in the wake of the QE2 like Charlton cruise liner but being put in to bat first in the final round seemed to take the wind out of Charlton’s sails a little as the visitors started to eat into their opponents lead. A bonus, another bonus, an

individual and another individual, was a New England Patriots style comeback on the Cards? The F&L stole the Charlton’s final team question to take the lead 69-71 with their own team question left! To a man (and woman Donna) they thought the Pyramids were made of sandstone and happily gave their answer, “Passover” said the question master, “Limestone” said the Charlton captain, correct said the question master, what an amazing end to a stuttering game. The Charlton ran out well deserved
winners, the F&L came second but oh so nearly sank the Charlton Cruise Liner at the death. The First & Last B entertained the Oak who ran out comfortable winners to move into second place. The Charlton A travelled to St
Govan’s Inn and romped into a 24 point lead going into the final round, home and dry, no, the home side turned the score around with an incredible 27 points to win by three. The evening’s final match was at
the Station between the A and B sides with both on 16pts so the higher league placing was at stake. The A side were better versed on
the week’s news but were not so clued up England’s capital, but in a swings and roundabouts game the A swept ahead on music, loved the Ding Bats and although outscored in the final two rounds they held on to take the plaudits. So the week’s scores were as
follows, First & Last b 60 Oak 82; St Govan’s Inn 74 Charlton A 71; Station B 71 Station A 80; Golf Club 70 Alma 88 and Charlton B 72 First & Last A 71. This means the Charlton B hold on to their fragile lead at the top of the table with 25pts from the Oak and Alma on 24 whilst the Golf club remain on 21 and an emerging Station A on 19.
