Thought of the week... I’ve never had much interest in

Chinese history but it all changed when I was given a biography of Mao Tse Tung. The CD makes for riveting listening when travelling around in the car because claims to be the most authoritative life of Mao ever. It is certainly full of surprises and if true, explodes many of the myths about his amazing rise to power. And it’s full of stories that remind me that human emotions play as much a part in the course of history as any economic or social forces. Take the way in which the Chinese

Communist Party first achieved recognition for example The Russian

dictator Stalin was determined to persuade the Chinese Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-Shek to meet up with what Chiang regarded as a “gang of terrorists”. Put simply Chiang was as keen to meet with the communists as President Trump would be if asked to meet Isis. But Stalin had a trump card of his

own. Chiang’s son was a hostage in Moscow and he let it be known that he would be allowed home if Chiang toed the line and did what Stalin wanted. And because he loved his son he met them, thereby giving the Chinese Communist Party international the recognition it craved.

United Parish Acts of Worship - Love is powerful, and as this story

shows it can persuade us to do the most unexpected even painful things. And as such it’s a constant reminder that we have been made in the image of a loving God. It was love, after all, that drove His Son to the cross. As someone once observed “It was not the nails that held Him there”. It’s the kind of love that prompted one hymn writer to say “Love so amazing, so divine demands my life, my soul, my all”. And on a more personal note it’s the love that catapulted me into the pastoral ministry. Pastor Rob James
