23 Community PUPILS, staff and governors at
Ysgol y Preseli are delighted after receiving results from the recent school inspection. Estyn inspectors published their
report on February 3, and the top two overall judgements - Ysgol y Preseli’s current performance and the prospects for improvement - have been confirmed as being ‘Good’. The judgements are based on the standards of students’ achievement, the provision and the leadership at the school. The well-being of pupils at the
school was judged to be 'excellent'. Inspectors stated there were very high standards in terms of pupils’ well-being, which is a notable aspect of school life. Pupils’ attendance rates are consistently high; the excellent behaviour of nearly all pupils is an exceptional feature; pupils show passionate pride in their school and community and a mature understanding of their role as responsible citizens; and the school is a caring and inclusive community that operates conscientiously for the benefit of all pupils. The learning experiences of the
school were also judged as ‘excellent’. Estyn stated 'the school offers a broad and balanced curriculum that responds to national needs and the needs of the individual' and a particularly notable feature 'is the way in which the school has responded to the requirements of the Literacy & Numeracy Framework'.
The report said: "As a result of
purposeful planning, there are rich opportunities for pupils to develop these skills across the curriculum." It also stated that "Creative and
stimulating opportunities are provided for pupils to develop their wider skills through the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualifications." The Learning Environment of the
school also received an ‘excellent’ judgement. Estyn said: “Ysgol y Preseli is an
extremely homely community with an inclusive and caring Welsh ethos. There is a productive relationship between the staff, pupils and parents. They work together purposefully and are very supportive of each other." The leadership of the school was
also praised as one of the school’s strengths, which were: - The Headteacher has a clear and
strategic vision that places a definite focus on raising standards and enriching pupils’ experiences. - The school fosters a culture of
effective distributed leadership among the staff. Governors have a robust understanding of the school’s work. - The school has rigorous processes
in place to ensure quality and planning for improvement. Estyn has invited the school to
prepare a written case study, describing the excellent practice that was seen during the inspection.
The Estyn report follows the
recent categorisation of the school by the Welsh Government as being in the 'Green' category both for standards and capacity for improvement. Headteaher, Mr Michael Davies
said: “The Estyn report makes very good reading and is the best kind of reward for all the hard work that has contributed to such a positive result. The report is full of praise for Ysgol y Preseli’s many strengths and we are delighted with both the report and categorisation result that position us among the best schools in Wales. "The report reflects the excellent
work of our staff and governors, the drive, positive attitudes and excellent results achieved by our pupils and the value placed by their parents and the whole community on the success
of Welsh-Medium education in Pembrokeshire.” Mr Des Davies, Chair of Governors,
said: "We are extremely proud of the positive Estyn report and also of achieving the top colour band in this year's Welsh Government National Categorisation System meaning that Ysgol y Preseli is a highly effective school. "It is a tribute to the strong
leadership of the Headteacher and the senior management team, the dedication and determination of both staff and students and the support of parents and governors. It reflects the tremendous team effort of the whole school community who understand and respect the vision and own the school's mission, which is "Cofia Ddysgu Byw"/'Remember to learn to live'”.
Cllr David Lloyd, Cabinet Member
for Education, said: “My sincere congratulations to the pupils, staff and governors of Ysgol y Preseli on being categorised a Green school in relation to their standards and their capacity to sustain these standards. “I was not surprised to learn of
this news. I recently had the pleasure of visiting Ysgol y Preseli where I experienced the strong sense of ownership that the pupils had for their school. The quiet self-assurance of the pupils as they interacted with one another evoked an atmosphere of learning and citizenship which was palpable. "The excellent Estyn report of
February 3, 2017 specifically refers to this feature.”
