on top in their opening game of the 2017 Six Nations tournament with a 33-7 win against Italy in Rome on Sunday, February 5. The men in Red did not have it all

their own way as they were kept at bay by a strong Italy team and they had to come from behind to pick up the win. Wales’ only points in the first sixty

minutes came from the boot of Leigh Halfpenny who scored four penalties to keep the scoreboard ticking over. The home side seemed to tire and

tackled and the chance disappeared. With just under thirty minutes

gone the Italians pushed forward and they were eventually rewarded for their play with a pushover try from Edoardo Mori and the conversion gave them a 7-0 lead. Leigh Halfpenny then reduced the

deficit with a penalty but Wales still trailed 7-3 when the half time whistle went.

Wales continued to plug away in

Wales took full advantage to score three tries and they came agonisingly close to securing what would have been a crucial bonus point. Wales came close early on on

Sunday as Dan Biggar kicked the ball forward for Liam Williams who gathered the ball well but he was

the second half with Halfpenny adding two more penalties to take the visitors into the lead before he added his fourth penalty of the game. It was then that Wales took over

worked the ball to the right for Jonathan Davies who sped over for the try and Halfpenny again added the extras. With just under fifteen minutes

to go Liam Williams received the ball out on the left before making his way over to score Wales’ second try which Halfpenny converted. With time running out George

North, who appeared to be carrying a knock, received the ball and ran 70 metres to score Wales’ third try which Halfpenny again converted. That was the end of the scoring but

and a move that started with Alun Wyn-Jones and also featured Jonathan Davies eventually saw Rhys Webb make his way through the determined Italian defence but the referee ruled that he was just short of the line. However, just three minutes later they finally had their first try as Wales

with the new rules in place a fourth try would have brought a bonus point and they almost got it at the end when Liam Williams came close but he had lost control of the ball and no try was given. It was an excellent win for Wales

but they will need to play better than they did in the first half of this match if they are to stand a chance in the big game against England tomorrow (Feb 11).
