Prior to accepting my position on mondo*dr, my travel experience was pretty poor. I was a typical British citizen mainly holidaying in Europe. However, I was given a great opportunity to take on the Asia Pacific region, and I have already clocked up a good wedge of airmiles. Amongst my highlights so far are Singapore, Australia and China. China, the first time was a huge culture shock. And when it came to entertainment I wasn’t really sure what to expect. But after a few visits to various parts of China and the chance to experience some entertainment venues first hand, I soon realised China was much like any other country. A strong contingent of Chinese like to socialise by listening to music, hitting the dancefloor, or belting out a tune on the karaoke - a staple in most Chinese clubs. The city of Guangzhou is much more a manufacturing city than a city of bright lights and tourist attractions like Shanghai and Beijing. So, when I heard about not one but two new clubs opening in the city, and by pure coincidence I would actually be in Guangzhou the following week, I just had to arrange a visit. I was met by Director of d&b audiotechnik China, Daniel Chan, and Sales Manager, Alex Poon, who acted as my guides for the afternoon. Our first visit was to Lili Marleen, a nightclub that has

been open for about six months. It is located on the ground floor of the Crown Plaza Hotel in the city centre of Guangzhou. Lili Marleen caters for live bands and has two DJ booths. It targets 30-something business professionals who work in the offices around town, and have money to spend on entertainment. The venue takes its name from one of the most magical songs from the 20th Century European songbook: ‘Lili Marleen’ by Lale Andersen (1939). The German singer-songwriter and a German-based manufacturer seem to have fused together perfectly in this Chinese nightclub to produce a satisfying combination. Owners Mr Wong and Mr Chen have established other nightclubs in cities across China, but Lili Marleen has become the flagship venue of the Marleen Nightclub Group. The first four clubs were not kitted out with d&b systems, but the owners knew that with the flagship venue they needed to go the extra mile. Mr Wong visited other clubs in China to research the best quality audio. He visited a number of clubs, which were installed with d&b and was very impressed with the results. Mr Wong approached d&b, and asked for a product demonstration. “When Daniel Chan from d&b China took us to visit other d&b installations around the country, we knew immediately that this was the best system,” said Mr Chen. Mr Wong added: “Being a bar owner, I knew that d&b has one of the most advanced technology loudspeaker systems on the market. I wanted to be a pioneer in this industry. So I made the decision to
