Set within Cosmopolitan, the latest resort to impress itself on the Las Vegas skyline, Marquee is pushing technological boundaries in a bid to establish an identity amongst the most crowded entertainment environment in the world. With international music stars and DJs taking an instant liking to the place, it seems its owner, Tao Group, is doing something right. But what exactly does it take to be a major player in Vegas? A budget estimated at $50 million and a footprint of 62,000 sq ft is good start. And appointing a design team led by architect David Rockwell of Rockwell Group, which includes lighting designer Jules Fisher’s companies, Third Eye, Fisher Dachs Associates (FDA) and Fisher Marantz Stone (FMS), as well as lighting designers SJ Lighting, video specialists SenovvA, audio masters Sound Investment Audio (SIA) and stage machinists Show Motion, will stand you in good stead. Like the club itself, which has three internal rooms and an outdoor day club, the equipment list is vast. The stimulating visual elements include lighting from Elation, Philips Color Kinetics, Birket, Philips Vari-Lite, Martin Professional, ETC, Pulsar and MA Lighting, and video configurations incorporating Barco, Crestron, Apple, Canon, Matrox, V Squared Labs and Green Hippo. While the audio list is dominated by Funktion One and Pioneer, along with kit from Yamaha, Rane, Shure, BSS Audio, JBL, Martin Audio, Nexo and QSC.


MAIN ROOM The Main Room’s ceiling reaches 60ft at its highest point, but this depth is reduced by hanging drapes and six light pods, designed by Show Motion. Each pod is loaded with one upward and one downward facing Elation Design Spot 300 Pro fixture, and illuminated with Philips Color Kinetics 6-inch iColor Coves and Birket Speciality Lighting 7W LED Strobe-Briks. They are stabilised by RSC Lightlocks. The lighting system, which was specified by FDA and Third Eye, in conjunction with SJ Lighting and SenovvA, works with the dominant LED display wall positioned behind the main stage. It includes ETC Selador Lustr LED fixtures, which colour-wash the room’s back wall and a host of dynamic lighting fixtures, including Philips Vari-Lite VL2500 Spots, VL1000AI and VL1000AS luminaires, more Elation Design Spot 300 Pro fixtures and Elation Opti Tri Par units. FDA’s Micah Rahn handled the lighting infrastructure while SJ Lighting’s owner Steve Lieberman used his considerable experience in entertainment lighting to specify the entertainment lighting package for the Main Room dancefloor. And it was a package unique to Marquee, as Steve explained: “I’ve always been a big believer in ‘the right product for the right job’. As a designer, there’s a feature set that we want to get. The fixtures that are in the Main Room, which are the Elation Design Spot; it’s a 300W fixture which is a pretty widely used wattage for a nightclub environment. It’s an
