Top Returner A KATIE FERRIS (SR.) Already the all-time leading scorer in UMass history, Ferris had 75 points for a team that averaged nearly 15 goals per game in 2013. The two-time Atlantic-10 Offensive Player of the Year will cement her status as UMass’ best ever especially if the team can improve on its NCAA tournament second-round finish.

Annie Foky
X-Factor D KELSEY SHERIDAN (SR.) A two-year starter on defense, Sheridan is the fastest player on the team, according to coach Angela McMahon. But she’ll be asked to slow down many opponents’ top offensive threats this spring. A midfielder in high school, Sheridan can also push the ball in transition with her speed.
Enemy Lines WHAT RIVAL COACHES SAY
“Always prepared for their opponent, play a scrappy style and find ways to win… Could be in
the top 10 with a couple of key wins… They need to be consistent down the home stretch, as some A-10 teams played them close.”
Navy MIDSHIPMEN 2013 RECORD: 19-2 (6-0 PATRIOT LEAGUE) Top Returner G ANNIE FOKY (JR.)
Finishing third in NCAA Division I with a 7.13 goals against average, Foky is the reigning Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year after taking over the starting job early in the season for the Mids, who finished third in the nation allowing just 7.43 goals a game. With new conference foes Loyola and Boston University on the schedule in 2014, she’ll need to remain on point for Navy to capture a fifth straight league title.
X-Factor A/M JILL COUGHLIN (SR.) Coughlin scored the game-winning goal in Navy’s overtime win against New Hampshire in 2013 and will be expected to help on that end more. She will play more attack as the Mids try to replace NCAA scoring leader Jasmine DePompeo.
Enemy Lines
WHAT RIVAL COACHES SAY “Perhaps the most fit team out there. The bench is deep and the coaches are intense… Can the Mids replace Jasmine DePompeo? If so, expect another Patriot League title and NCAA berth.”

Boston College EAGLES
2013 RECORD: 12-8 (3-2 ACC)
Enemy Lines WHAT RIVAL COACHES SAY
“Stanwick and Rix need to have big games every game… Every year BC gets a lot of hype and they most always get a signature win. But they haven’t been able to get the wins when they needed them late in the season. Inconsistency has killed them.”

UMass MINUTEWOMEN
2013 RECORD: 18-3 (7-0 ATLANTIC 10)
Top Returner A JILL REMENAPP (JR.) Remenapp set a team record with 113 points as a sophomore while leading the NCAA in assists with 74, second-most all-time. With the graduation of Denver’s all-time leading scorer Kara Secora, she’ll be expected to lead even more this spring as she finds new targets for those assists.
17
Top Returner A ERIN MCMUNN (JR.) The Ivy League’s Attacker of the Year after a 69-point sophomore season, McMunn returns with all eyes on her in 2014. She set the Princeton assists record (30) as a freshman, but was more of a scorer (40 goals) as a sophomore, making life difficult for defenses trying to pigeonhole her into a role.
19
X-Factor D COLLEEN SMITH (SR.) A defensive leader for Princeton, Smith brings both intensity (14 CT, 21GB) and assists with the work at the circle, controlling 24 draws in her first year as a starter. She’s the Tigers’ captain.
Enemy Lines WHAT RIVAL COACHES SAY
“The Tigers need to reload, but have a talented freshman class, so that shouldn’t be a problem… Will the Ivy League remain a top conference against top-20 teams?... If you can limit McMunn’s touches, then you can be successful. She’s the key for them.”
Covie
Top Returner A COVIE STANWICK (JR.) Stanwick set a Boston College single-season record with 65 goals and earned second-team IWLCA All-American honors as a sophomore, as did classmate Mikaela Rix. She scored five goals in the Eagles’ NCAA tournament first-round loss to Dartmouth.
Stanwick
X-Factor A BROOKE BLUE (SR.) A well-respected senior leader, Blue missed much of last year after a knee injury, but has scored 160 goals in her career. A return
to form will make the already-tough Eagles offense that much tougher.
February 2014 >> LACROSSE MAGAZINE 67
X-Factor M MONICA LUCAS (SO.) A touted recruit out of Maryland, Lucas headlines a large sophomore class that’s expected to play a much larger role after graduation losses from a team that lost to Florida in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Lucas played in 11 games and had four points as a freshman.
Enemy Lines WHAT RIVAL COACHES SAY
“Last year’s return to form surprised many, but shouldn’t have. Expect them to win the MPSF and take the automatic bid… If they had returned their team from last year, I would put them as high as 12th. But they lost some stars.”
