COLLEGE PREVIEW 2014 NCAA DIVISION I MEN’S TOP 20 7 Mike Chanenchuk

Virginia, Hopkins and Notre Dame in four straight weeks. Only the Virginia game is at home. With Maryland bound for the Big Ten, it could be their last regular season game for a while.

Enemy Lines WHAT RIVAL COACHES SAY
“Baby Terps are huge talents but leadership and offensive identity yet to be determined. Defense is legit... No. 1 recruiting class. Who’s ego gets hurt?... Defensively, Amato between the pipes is not a bad place to start, as well as with Murray, Ikeda and Ehrhardt. This end of the field was the engine that drove them to two straight championship games… Last ACC go- around will be a sweet one for Terps.”

rom the likes of Grant Catalino, Ryan Young and Owen Blye on attack to stalwarts such as Jake Bernhardt and
John Haus in the midfield, coach John Tillman usually knew the complexion of Maryland’s offense well in advance of his first three seasons in College Park. This spring, he doesn’t get that luxury. “It’s really up for grabs,” Tillman said.
“It’s a little unsettling.” Rather than attempt a massive overhaul
upon arriving at Maryland before 2011, Tillman maximized the talent he inherited from coach Dave Cottle. The Terps reached back-to- back NCAA finals. But with a
veteran offense, Maryland
faded
in 2013 and lost in the first round after starting 8-1. It was only a
matter of time before
Tillman put his imprint
on the offense, especially considering his background as Navy’s offensive coordinator. That time has arrived. Just two of Maryland’s six offensive
starters return, and attackman Jay Carlson went in and out of the lineup last year as the Terps sought a reliable third attackman. With the arrival of

lauded freshmen Connor Cannizzaro, Matt Rambo and Tim Rotanz, there’s an intriguing blend of promising talent and complete inexperience at the college level. Senior Mike Chanenchuk will be a cornerstone in the midfield. Beyond him, there are uncertainties. Junior Joe LoCascio ran on Maryland’s second line last season. The Terps will need him and other reserves to take a step forward. “We’re going to look at their skill sets
and create a scheme around what works well,” Tillman said. “Everyone is going to have to adjust a little bit to make sure the whole thing works as well as possible.” Conceptually,
Tillman promised
Maryland doesn’t plan to veer away from what has produced 35 victories over the last three seasons. But there aren’t many knowns with the Maryland offense. Even a few weeks from the start of practice, Tillman was reluctant to guess on a projected starting lineup. “Like I told the guys in the fall, we’re
still writing this book,” Tillman said. “You guys can write the chapters the way you want. We’ve held off saying ‘These are the starters.’”
