Tournament Trend 6 Kelsey Duryea I

t’s Red Sox-Yankees, Athens-Sparta and Bayside-Valley all tangled up in different shades of blue. It’s Duke-

North Carolina, and it sits near the top of any great rivalry list. But at least when it comes to women’s lacrosse, it’s not only about animosity. When North Carolina won the NCAA championship last May, it brought a surprising reaction from the other end of Tobacco Road. “There’s a lot of mutual respect,” said

Enemy Lines WHAT RIVAL COACHES SAY

“They are athletic and have a good goalie — always a winning combo. Taylor Trimble is a superstar… Haven’t been to a final four in a while. I’d like them to be more creative on attack and pressure more on defense… Talented on the draw and tough in the cage… One of the nation’s best recruiting powerhouses every year. Will they mature and take the next step? Maybe.”

Kerstin Kimel, Duke’s coach since the team’s inception in 1996. “It’s one of the fiercest rivalries

in the

country, and that’s especially

true

among our fans. But

sometimes

you can kind of push things aside and be genuinely happy for them.” These teams have long been

known to put aside their differences when the game ends. In 2011, Duke and North Carolina chartered a flight together to the NCAA final four at Stony Brook. Kimel and Tar Heels coach Jenny Levy are longtime friends. Their kids have grown up together, and their families sit together when Duke plays North Carolina in football.

Top Returner A KERRIN MAURER (JR.)

The quarterback of Duke’s offense for the past two seasons looked healthier than ever in fall ball.

While the Blue Devils weren’t satisfied

with the way their season ended — a loss to Maryland in the NCAA quarterfinals — they were happy to see a first-time team take the title. Duke could be next. The once-perennial

final four favorite had to rebuild starting in 2012, when Kimel put much of the offense in the hands of freshmen Kerrin Maurer and Taylor Trimble. The Blue Devils’ scoring average dropped by nine goals that season. Last year, they managed more than 12 goals per game. It was an improvement, but still far from the 20-plus goals they averaged from 2009 to 2011. The ACC is tough and will get even

tougher with the addition of Syracuse and Notre Dame. But also, Duke was inexperienced up front. Now with Maurer and Trimble as upperclassmen, those two years of rebuilding while contending should pay off. With All-Americans on the back end

in senior defender Taylor Virden and sophomore goalie Kelsey Duryea, Duke should be better. The problem is, so will the entire ACC. “It’s going to be an insane, crazy [ACC] tournament,” Kimel said. — Mark Macyk
