Enemy Lines WHAT RIVAL COACHES SAY

“After winning a gold medal, Fried has this team believing in their ride… Fried is a very good coach, but hasn’t always had the personnel… Tons of depth keeps their middie lines rested and fast, and their high-pressure ride can give teams headaches… Looks easier for them in the Big East this year… Need to improve their shooting percentage (43.5 percent in 2013).”

Key Game Georgetown nearly came

back to win last year but missed a free-position shot in the final seconds, sealing an 11-10 win for Duke. The teams once again meet during a tough portion of the Hoyas’ schedule.

eorgetown implements a system that has proven to work at the highest levels, and Hoyas the coach that knows how to run it. But Ricky Fried is still trying to figure

out how to make his college team successful against the top programs in the country, while using what won him a World Cup gold medal with the U.S. women’s national team last summer. Following back-to-back 9-8 seasons, Georgetown made a jump last season with 13 wins, only to be one-and-done in the NCAA tournament after a first-round bye. It’s been 10 years since the Hoyas last played in the final four. “We use the

same sets or tactics on both ends with both teams,” Fried said. “The big difference is the

U.S. team is a lot faster, but I think the biggest thing that’s consistent is our ride. That plays a key factor across the board. It puts a lot of pressure on our opponents both physically and mentally.” Georgetown played Team USA in the

fall, and Fried said the Hoyas played well enough to see they could be successful

using the same tactics. One of the main reasons his methods work with Team USA, aside from talent, is buy-in from the players. It’s a lot to ask of any college team

to try to emulate what Team USA does, Fried said, but the players don’t seem to mind. “It actually helps us,” senior captain

Kelyn Freedman said. “We see what they do and learn from that because they are the best players in the world, and we know we have a great coach leading us. He’s the best tactical coach, and he knows so much about the game. We trust him.” One factor Fried hopes will make a

difference is junior attacker Caroline Tarzian, who joined Team USA in 2012. She scored 34 goals her freshman year at Georgetown and was the squad’s leading scorer last season, recording 36 goals and 14 assists. Tarzian could be poised for an even bigger junior year. “She will really be able to bring some

of that confidence and some of that deep understanding to our team on the offensive end,” Fried said.
