Enemy Lines WHAT RIVAL COACHES SAY

“Deepest offense in the nation with interchangeable parts. Can they win a faceoff when it counts?… They won games due to a very productive offense where the wealth was spread out. Losing [JoJo] Marasco will hurt, but everyone else returns. Throw in the touted freshman class, Galasso and possibly Staats, and this offense may even be more potent… Mullins coming back is huge for the defense.”

Key Game Syracuse likely will still be

tinkering with its lineup when ACC play begins. This game also follows a big rematch with Albany, which beat the Orange at home in 2013.

f there is a preseason frontrunner for coach of the year, it might be John Desko. Because if he pulls the strings correctly on the Orange’s plethora of returning and incoming offensive talent, it would be a major accomplishment. Syracuse returns its entire starting

attack, one of its first-line midfielders and two others from the second-line. For most teams, especially a national runner-up, it would be simple enough: Bump the two second-liners to the top unit and call it a day. In fact, that’s exactly what Duke plans on doing. But

this outfit

isn’t most teams. Nicky

Galasso,

Randy Staats and Jordan

Evans,

all major talents ready to take the field for Syracuse for the first time, don’t have defined roles

heading

into 2014. Any one of them could be the centerpiece of another team’s offense. Galasso, the former top-ranked recruit

in the country, transferred from North Carolina before last season but broke his foot last January. Staats, an electric junior college transfer, could be the best player in the country and was set to join the team in

early January. Evans was widely regarded as one of the top recruits in this year’s freshman class. He inherited Syracuse’s iconic jersey No. 22 upon arrival and played attack and midfield in the fall. “I’m making it hard because I can’t tell

you,” Desko joked when asked about his projected starters. The fact is, Syracuse’s offensive lineup

in February may be drastically different from what it is in May, and vary between, depending on matchups and chemistry. “Even if the top six offensive players

were attackmen, you’d see them out there in different spots playing in the midfield, maybe inverting behind,” Desko said. “It’s always been a work in progress.” The Orange’s faceoff quagmire poses the

bigger question. Eight players combined for a 42-percent win rate, ranking 55th of 63 Division I teams. Chris Daddio and Cal Paduda are back,as is Ricky Buhr after missing 2013. Another junior college transfer, Mike Iacono of Nassau, was working to join Syracuse around the same time as Staats.
