Enemy Lines WHAT RIVAL COACHES SAY

“Thompson, Thompson, and Thompson. Top attack unit in college lacrosse and it isn’t even close... Mystical attack. Weakness is tasting their own transition medicine … The thing that makes the Thompsons so great is how hard they ride. They help to create a lot of chaos in that aspect of the game. Many of the top attackmen today do not focus on the ride as much as they should.”

Key Game Albany again hits the road

to face the Blue Jays in Baltimore, where it pulled off a 10-9 win last year. This will be a good barometer for both teams, and could figure prominently come NCAA tournament selection time.

he Thompsons get the attention. But aside from when either Lyle, Miles or Ty makes a dazzling play only they can

make, you won’t see the Albany bench more excited than when a complementary player steps up in a big way. Take Albany’s thrilling 10-9 win over

Johns Hopkins last season. Defenseman Doug Eich took a pass from goalie Blaze Riorden, ran the length of the field with his long pole and scored the go-ahead goal with two minutes left. The sideline erupted. In Albany’s season-opening, double- overtime win over Syracuse, the

trio combined for 18 points. But a midfielder had a hand in seven of the 16 goals. “We’re going to

have a lot of help,” Lyle

Thompson

said. “Our middies can play. If a team wants to focus

on just me, Miles and Ty, our middies are capable of stepping up and playing big.” Albany uses an unorthodox midfield

setup, rotating four pairs of two instead of the conventional three-player lines. They all are expected to play offense and defense in one quick shift, much like hockey. The Danes return six of their top eight

midfielders from last year — including Ryan Feuerstein, Matt Garziano, Tim Cox, Derrick Eccles and Kevin McNally — plus Penn State transfer Riley Lasda. “Even while we’re substituting, we’re

going to the goal,” Albany coach Scott Marr said. “We don’t really stop at all. We keep coming at you in waves of midfielders.” Sophomore John Maloney is a fourth attackman/midfielder who will play as much as possible with the Thompsons. “He’s really good at catching inside,” Lyle Thompson said. “We think he’d be good at box.” Junior Will Stenberg fills a similar fourth attackman role. Watch 210-pound Canadian freshman Jake Cullen, too. Marr knows his up-tempo offense sometimes exposes his defense. But he’s confident that with experienced midfielders, a year of understanding the new rules and two starting close defenseman back in front of Riordan, the unit will be stronger than the one that was sixth-worst (12.50 goals allowed per game) in Division I. Albany averaged 15.94 goals on the

other end and lost in an NCAA tournament first-round shootout at Denver. Even a mild improvement on defense could lead to a deeper run.

Riorden had some monster games (20 saves against Johns Hopkins, 13 against Syracuse) as a freshman. His continued development could help a defense that is vulnerable to as many transition chances as it creates.
