COLLEGE PREVIEW 2014 NCAA DIVISION I WOMEN’S TOP 20 15 Andi Raymond

Key Game Towson has lost 10 straight

in the series. The Tigers were successful against Hoyas coach Ricky Fried’s Team USA in the fall and look to exploit the same schemes in this matchup. A win would set the tone for the season.

Enemy Lines WHAT RIVAL COACHES SAY

“Super scrappy and super inconsistent. If they can moderate their play and use their veteran leadership, they could surprise a lot of people… They beat Team USA. I don’t care if it was just a scrimmage. They have huge potential and talent… They’re athletic, talented and play with something to prove… Strong win over U.S. team in the fall. Can this team perform like this in the spring?”

eing competitive isn’t enough for Towson anymore. After coming within three goals of

both NCAA finalists (Maryland and North Carolina) last season, the Tigers are anxious to break through in big games. They’ve made the NCAA tournament in four of the last five years, only to lose in the first round each time, including an 8-6 loss to Stony Brook last season. In fact, Towson, the two-time defending

CAA champion, has never won an NCAA tournament game. The Tigers lost six games to teams ranked in the top 15 last year. “We’re

not

interested in just being conference champs anymore,” Towson

coach

Sonia LaMonica said. “We want to be a program that has national prominence.” The

Tigers’

surprising, albeit unofficial fall-ball victory over Team USA further whetted the Tigers’ appetite for big wins. “Our skills have always been there, but

that game gave us confidence in how well we can perform against even the top teams,” said attacker Rhiannon Coogle, who scored five goals in the 9-6 win.

Top Returner A ASHLEIGH ROHRBACK (R-SR.)

Despite missing the first six games due to injury, Rohrback was Towson’s top scorer. Andi Raymond’s return will only help her.

Towson has moved to a more transition-

friendly style to push fast breaks. It worked against Team USA, and LaMonica believes it’s best way to finally pull through in tight games the Tigers have lost in the past. “It played well into our hands because

Team USA plays a 12-man ride,” LaMonica said. “The players knew if they remained composed and handled that initial pressure, but remained aggressive pushing the ball down the field, we were going to land ourselves in man-up fast breaks. We had a number of goals on 4-v- 3s or 3-v-2s because we broke that ride.” The Tigers won’t always face full-field pressure, but they plan to play up-tempo regardless. It will start with a “pressure backer” defense, led by Katie Leech and Kaitlin Sheridan, and end with a finishing touch from attackers like Coogle, Ashleigh Rohrback and Andi Raymond, Towson’s top scorer in 2012 who returns from a medical redshirt. “It’s risk-reward, but we don’t want to

play safe,” LaMonica said. “We want to play hard-nosed, aggressive, foot-to-the- floor lacrosse — infusing some of those cutting-edge things you see more in the men’s game.”
