Enemy Lines WHAT RIVAL COACHES SAY
“Loss of top attackers, but have depth with Cummings and a full defensive unit. Stukenberg and Torggler should be immediate impact players… Their staff recruits so well, it’s intimidating to everyone else. Cummings is poised for a monster year if she stays healthy…Should have won last year. Choked… Thought for sure they would win it all last year, and the sting of that final loss will be extra motivation.”

Key Game Maryland had won six of
seven in the series before the NCAA final. Slow starts have cost the Terps in the two games they have lost to North Carolina in the last two years. It’s a rematch of LM’s best game of 2013.

ith nearly half her starters being new, Cathy Reese’s Maryland team might not start out as fast as it did
last year. That’s OK, if the finish is better. After winning its first 22 games, including a fifth straight ACC title, Maryland lost to North Carolina in the NCAA championship game triple-overtime classic. “It’s never going to sting any less,” Reese said. “It’s a great showcase for what women’s lacrosse can and should be.” Two-time Tewaaraton Award winner midfielder Katie Schwarzmann is gone, as are All-Americans Alex Aust and Iliana
Sanza.
Schwarzmann and Aust accounted for 210 points between them. “I worry with
our youth,” Reese said of a lineup that may only include one senior starter. “I want to make sure our
team stays focused and mentally tough, that we don’t get complacent.” Maryland wasn’t rushing to put the
pieces together in the fall. Like she has every year, Reese gave the players freedom on the field, not harping on specific offensive or defensive schemes, and played everyone on her roster.

Top Returner M TAYLOR CUMMINGS (SO.)
Rarely does a freshman make first-team All-American. Cummings was that good. She will run the show in College Park.
Goalie Kasey Howard’s graduation has
gotten less attention than the offensive losses, but could be just as important. She beat out Abbey Clipp last year, and Clipp will compete for the starting job this year with Emily Kift, a freshman from California. “They’re totally different players,” Reese
said. “Emily is super active. She’ll come out of the cage. Abbey is a traditional goalie. She’s very procedurally correct. Emily will take her chances. Abbey has more experience. They could split time or one could step up.” Freshmen Zoe Stukenberg and Morgan
Torggler also could be instant-impact players, but they can ease into the offense alongside Tewaaraton contender Taylor Cummings and All-American Brooke Griffin. “It’s going to be a different look when
we don’t have Katie Schwarzmann and Alex Aust on the offensive end,” Reese said. “But we have Taylor Cummings and Brooke. Brooke is ready to step up. It’s just going to be a different combination.” The exact combination is something that
the Terrapins hope they have figured out in time for a run at the program’s 11th NCAA championship.

X-Factor M KELLY MCPARTLAND (JR.)
The U.S. teamer has been a steady contributor, but Maryland needs McPartland to be more assertive on offense. “She needs to step up and be even bigger,” Reese said.
