Enemy Lines WHAT RIVAL COACHES SAY

“This is my dark-horse team. Missy Doherty’s passion gets them two to three wins each year. She is master at motivating and always has her team well-prepared. Maggie McCormick should put up big numbers… Their strong players have led since a young age… A great recruiting class should bolster an already strong team… Could see them winning the ALC.”

Key Game The Wildcats beat Penn

State three times last year, including a 9-8 overtime game in the ALC semifinals and 15-7 in the NCAA quarterfinals. The Nittany Lions haven’t beat Northwestern since 2003.

issy Doherty didn’t know what to expect from her Penn State women’s lacrosse team last

year, given its youth and inexperience. The Nittany Lions rarely looked like a team starting eight freshmen and sophomores, though. With wins over top opponents like Florida and Virginia, they rolled to a 14-7 finish and second straight NCAA quarterfinal appearance. “I was kind of anticipating a possible learning year and sort of just growing our younger players, but they didn’t care they were young,” Doherty said.

isn’t just on the rise. The Nittany Lions, seeking their first NCAA final four appearance since 1999, are out to prove they are here for the long run.

They will approach this season with

the same fearlessness that helped them overcome obstacles last year. The difference now is experience. Nine starters return. Just two seniors — defender Evan Foulsham and attacker Mackenzie Cyr — are among that group. But juniors Maggie McCormick, Tatum

Coffey and Kelly Lechner have played significant minutes since they stepped on campus. “Over the past few years, our team

has continued to improve,” McCormick said. “We believe that this Penn State team has the athleticism, experience, and work ethic to be one of the best teams in the nation and compete for a national championship.” Upsetting then-No. 2 Florida and

beating then-No. 6 Virginia last season with an aggressive style and fast-paced tempo showed the Nittany Lions they have the talent and philosophy to remain competitive. But Doherty said wins like those could

be more difficult to achieve with greater expectations. “That’s the challenge, because there’s

a little more drive sometimes when you are working your way up,” Doherty said. “We have to find new energy to expect a good team and keep that spot. It’s great to have the preseason rankings we do, but then everyone is gunning for you, and our program is still kind of in a

learning stage as to how to handle that.” — L.P.
