Enemy Lines WHAT RIVAL COACHES SAY

“Loyola’s midfield may be the best in the country… The Greyhounds have been on the verge of a breakthrough season for a few years now. They have talent, and they have coaching. Can they put it all together and win enough games to make the NCAA tournament? Expect Marlee Paton to be a force in the midfield… They have a speedy, relentless midfield, great sticks and nice team ‘D.’”

Taryn VanThof

aryn VanThof has been a part of four fall preseasons. She said the chemistry this fall bodes well for the

Loyola women’s lacrosse team. “Everybody clicked and everybody was on

the same page,” said VanThof, a redshirt junior midfielder. “We all enjoy coming out to practice. We had a great team dynamic. I guarantee it carries over to the spring.” The Greyhounds have the individual

talent to go far, so if they can work as a cohesive team, it could be a special season — the kind they had when VanThof was a freshman

who operates out of both the attack and the midfield. The latter unit is

stacked with VanThof and Katrina Geiger, who played more defense last year. “As a midfield duo, Katrina and Taryn complement each other’s playing style so well it’s fun to watch,” Greyhounds coach Jen Adams said. Loyola needs VanThof to build on a terrific 2013 campaign, when she

returned from the ACL injury that cost her the 2012 season. “There was definitely a hole in our midfield

in the year that Taryn was out,” Adams said. “Her athleticism and relentless play was what we missed in her absence.” VanThof came back better than ever,

particularly on the draw. She snared 75 draw controls, one shy of the 29-year-old school record. “Taryn and Katrina Geiger will take the

draw for us this season and their success in the center will be absolutely pivotal,” Adams said. “In her second season back from injury, Taryn has settled in to become a pivotal part of our midfield. She gives us the ability to run a fast and dynamic transition game.” VanThof’s impact stretched beyond

draws. She was second on the team with 25 caused turnovers, third with 37 ground balls and third on the team with 46 points on 28 goals and 18 assists. “Taryn’s presence is felt equally over

the entire field,” Adams said. “She has incredible athleticism and skill that can separate her from her opposition. This year she will need to step into the role of captain and leader.
