Tournament Trend 6 Derek Raabe

Key Game The Bulldogs ended

Prineton’s season in the Ivy League tournament. With both teams sporting loaded offensive units but some questions on the defensive end, New Haven could be in for fireworks.

Enemy Lines WHAT RIVAL COACHES SAY

“As good a first six on offense as there is… Schreiber’s vision is unmatched and he has the speed to match, both in his legs and his shot. And how about the transformation of Mike MacDonald from serving solely as a finisher to putting pressure on a defense as an accomplished dodger?… This team has a ton of seniors (15). That cannot be overlooked for leadership purposes.”

eam building can be a lot like baking. Great ingredients are a part of the process, but if they’re not mixed in

the right order, the entire thing comes out slightly off. That’s what happened to Princeton’s

defense last year. A dearth of natural close defensemen forced short-stick defensive midfielder Nick Fernandez and long-stick midfielder Derek Raabe to play out of position. The Tigers ended the year in the middle of Division I in scoring defense (29th out of 63 teams), but suffered on man-down (48th) and were near the bottom for caused turnovers (58th), symptoms of not having the right people in the right positions. Fortunately for

coach Chris Bates and new defensive coordinator John Walker, the component parts

look more like the right mix in 2014, at least on paper. Touted freshman Will Reynolds should step right into a starting role on defense, joining returning starter Mark Strabo and Alex Beatty. That trio will allow Raabe and Fernandez to return to roaming between the lines. Jack Strabo and Hunter deButts also were strong

members of the short-stick corps. “It just makes our depth so much

better,” Bates said. “There will be some growing pains, sure, but the pieces fit more naturally together. Having guys in their natural spots, we’re confident that we’ll hit the right fit and the right mix on defense.” While there are no guarantees the

pieces will gel right away, the Tigers look to be a lot stronger defensively this spring in front of sophomore goalie Matt O’Connor, who was challenged for time in the fall by Eric Sanschagrin. If a better defensive fit and improved

goalie play — O’Connor and Sanschagrin each hovered around 50 percent in 2013 — provide support behind a top- end offense, look for Princeton to win the Ivy League. “We have a senior-laden team, one

that is hungry,” said Bates, now working with his first full group of players that he recruited after replacing Bill Tierney before the 2010 season. “These kids come to Princeton wanting to play big games in May, so there’s no doubt that

the motivation to get back to that is here.” — Sean Burns

Princeton’s faceoff woes (47 percent) started with Murphy, who took the lion’s share (111- for-218). He needs to take pressure off the untested defense and feed an offense that averaged more than 12 goals per game.
